Well balanced article there. Doesnāt exactly endure you to the guy either.
Written by my Italian coach friend who I met on the L3 in Luffbra. Heās had some great interviews over the past couple of years!
Heās done
⦠and now the real crap starts.
Yes well done for walking some 60 marathons each day and screwing up a challenge for anyone else out there who would like to make a genuine attempt at it
I think it was 97/100 walked marathons.
That Washington Post article was just a list of facts we already know tbh; something of nothing?
I think really the purpose of the Conquer 100 is to boost or maintain his Public Speaking job. He needs to keep doing stuff to talk about.
Genuine question - what part has he screwed for future people? That he walked? His IVās? Something else? Iāll admit Iāve not really followed closely at all, but unlike the 50/50/50 where he used a combination of turbo and elliptical which made a bit of a mockery of stuff, on this one he has swum, cycled, and put one foot in front of the other for the relevant distances (hasnt he?)
Three attempted marathons then, brilliant just brilliant
I also found it an interesting look into his psyche that when his āworldā and business fell apart, he decided to address it by burying himself in Triathlons. I do wonder how much Oxygen is left for his wife and 5 kids; but we knew that.
I did find that interesting. Iāve lost my job, my house, etc ⦠Iām going to throw myself into a sport that is one of the biggest drags on your time and wallet that there is!
Personally didnāt know much of the stuff in that article
Iām just impressed. When he started out I thought, zero chance anyone could do that (plus why would they?). But he has done it - proved doubters like me wrong. Incredible what some people can do if they want to.
Equally with the backyard ultra stuff. I canāt get my head around how or why someone would do that. But itās kind of fascinating to see that they actually can.
Yes, but if 99.99% of people in his situation did what he does, theyād be divorced and slumped on a park bench drinking white lightning. Thatās why 99.99% of people (like us even) donāt do this sort of thing.
Does mental count:
Done 100 IMs? No
Divorced? No
Drinking White Lightning in a subway? Erā¦
1 out of 3 here
Yeah, I agree. I have to admit I donāt even understand how the average person finds the time to do a Deca, which in this context is pretty trivial. I would struggle to ever āsellā nearly 2 weeks of the year solidly doing a single race.
I can understand the back yard ultra from an athletic point of view - 2 runners turned up who believed that they could win and had the ability to keep going.
100 triathlons (and walking all those mathathons, drafting that bike, dropping those IVās) I can only see from a financial point of view as itās keeping him in the public eye with something to talk about.
This.
Thatās a big part of success for sport celebs isnāt it? Plus if we didnāt have something to talk about, what would we do?
Hi, what he has screwed up is the challenge itself. In other words to do 100 iron distance triathlons in 100 days. That is now his to claim. Its the same story with the 50 iron distance triathlons in 50 states in 50 days. Again he didnāt do that either yet it is his to claim and no one else can be the āfirstā to complete it.
I donāt mind about the IV and all the help he has had (the drafting I canāt make my mind up about). If he has inspired people that is fantastic. The person who comes to mind as I am typing this is Ranulph Fiennes. He has attempted some extraordinary things and sometimes he has failed. That is fine. He can still speak about those failures and just leave the challenge out there for someone else (probably him again) to have a go at. I think it is this that annoys he the most. The Cowboy sets out to do something, realises he canāt do it bends the rules and claims the prize.
I know that you can walk in an Ironman but to do that 97 times out of 100. Where are your standards and self respect.
Sorry this has come off as a rant. Didnāt meant it to
Thanks for explaining. I find it interesting you are undecided on drafting and find the IVās fine, yet itās the walking part you have a problem with. Thatās the part I wouldnāt have any issue with at all. Thatās still his own steam (unless he was literally being dragged around unconscious), and many many people do that in single Ironman races, let alone when you are trying to balance energy out against energy in over more than 3 months. Drafting is more of an issue for me. Why not just motopace him? Etc.
The fact heās sparking such debate however means heās probably achieved his goal!!
