Ironman Frankfurt 2019

Awesome stuff T2T, and looks like you have thought about what you need to do next!

Great report @T2T. Glad that you were able to tough it out on a very hard day.

Your ego could have been the death of you :upside_down_face::rofl:

Congratulations on your finish, especially in those conditions. I’d pick something a bit more northern European for next time; Frankfurt is nearly always boiling.

Well done T2T, just an achievement finishing in that heat.

Hopefully 2021 will be a bit more bearable.

Jeff

Funkster your mum will be F75 next year. Just sayin…

Be interested in what the Frankfurts have been weather wise.

Hot: 2010, 2015, 2019. Others?

Cold: 2016? (Pros with hypothermia)

Must have been some with reasonable temps?

I think 2012 was really wet/cold too.

Well done T2T and Funkster, great read your reports.

@T2T I did look for you on race morning, but missed you.

Glad you made it to the finish in a reasonable state

Annoyingly the race was moved back one week this year to avoid clashing with Roth.

Forecast has it at 25 degrees this Sunday.
For. Fucks. Sake

I think they just use their crystal ball, find the hottest weekend of the year and circle that day on the calendar

Yeah, sorry I was running around getting a timing chip and it took longer than I thought to get there. I cycled to the lake the day before and it was a lot less stressful.

@funkster Did you notice there was a cool rain on Sunday night. The weather was lovely on Monday as well. In fact any day compared to Sunday would have been preferable. I was by the finishing line on Friday listening to the German Race briefing and i could not cope with the heat just sitting in the seating area.

Central Europe is like that, one day is blistering, the next can be utter crap. It was like that first time I did Austria (Hot then downpours next day) and Roth (thunderstorms, then lovely next day), Regensburg…the list goes on.

To be fair I have a pretty big comfort zone of ~10 to 30 degrees for the long stuff. At least with the cold/wet you can dress for it. Anything over 30 is damage limitation.

At the risk of putting a kiss-of-death on it, Austria is a ā€˜reliable’ event as far as the race going ahead as planned, and rarely non-wetsuit. It’s also very convenient logistically, and good for families. The run is also largely shaded if it is warm. This event should be high on anyone’s list. The only Ironman I’ve done twice.

Good point, but I have already registered for Triathlon X (don’t ask).

I am thinking of Vichy next year so I can take the family and travel round France…
It is unlikely to be as hot as Frankfurt and at least I would have had some hot weather to train in by then…

If not everyone is telling me that Zell am See is amazing and fits in also with UK school holidays

Vichy has been brutally hot in past events, it has 'continental 'weather systems.

Ok scrap that… thanks

I looked at Vichy when I was picking my IM as it suited me (flat bike, non-wetsuit swim likely). One year it was over 40C and the locals stood in the garden hosing the cyclists. Think the run as basically no shade.

Definitely one to do one day I think. Other reason I didn’t go for it as it looked a crap place for the family to have a holidays with me (young kids).

In school holiday time, your best options are Sweden, Copenhagen and if they can sort that fcuking algae out…Hamburg. None of which are really family destination events imho. All northern European obvs.

Coach Cox has the DNS/DNF rate at over 26%

Higher than 2015

That’s just a bit lumpy. Come out for a road trip with actual surfers!
