I am just talking to one at present about leasing the odd day at the clinic and i also mentor one…
Both are clear in their advice that they cannot guarantee anything…

The plot thickens - Ironman have now claimed Triathlon Ireland only informed them they were not sanctioning the race ‘several hours’ AFTER the swim
Sounds like a lot of arse covering going on
Interesting…but I would like to think the TO gave their verdict BEFORE the swim.
Even then, there is nothing to stop the organiser cancelling the swim after it has started…
“ On the morning of Sunday 20 August, IRONMAN Ireland officials and the specific on-swim safety team carried out all standard safety protocol checks that are completed at every race and determined water conditions were safe for the swim to take place. ”
If you haven’t read it
Thanks
Over to the legal teams…
Everyone’s shitting it.
Apart from the Chinese
Because what’s 2 humans in the Maoist army
As always, the only ‘winners’.
It’s turning into a real shit show, Tri Ireland and IM both disagreeing about events. This is fueling a social media frenzy, even maintstream media picking up on it
Just read one post from a guy who competed who claimed that swimmers were repeatedly knocked back by 10 foot waves.
Didn’t someone get runover by the Titanic too?
Keith 0”Sullivan ?
If that’s the one you read that was really quite upsetting and not a rant either.
Total shitshow.
Too soon
Surely if you were not sanctioning a race, you’d have something that backed up the timing of the comms, even if it was just a text?
Yeah I read that. It sounds frightening. Swimmers being thrown into rocks. Spectators helping swimmers out of the water. The general panic.
The pros struggling to make it out to the first buoy should have been enough of a warning.
That’s the one. While I doubt that the waves were 10 feet, I know from experience that waves feel huge, genuine 10 foot waves are f’ing terrifying and insanely powerful. the more serious issue was the current - a current running at 2kph, will mean that many swimmers are totally unable to progress against it
Yep people who know the sport reading the “ pros struggling “ bit are cringing … like us.
For me that’s key in this, time to the first buoy was very very slow for no doubt some very fast swimmers how are the “ normal “
People going to do ?!?
Some one should have grabbed the bull by the horns and turned it into a duathlon right there
But it’s easy to be a Monday morning quarter back ( get that all the time in boxing )
Folk baying fur blood everywere getting messy this now
Yes, I’ve been in 4-5ft waves in Perranporth on a spicy year and it feels nuts; and there were no rocks.
The issue really is that almost no-one participating has likely been out training in those conditions they met on the day.
10ft for me would be about 16ft, as we measure from the back, so 10ft face would be about 6ft. That’s still a big lump and none of that looked like clean faced. I didn’t see anything that suggested even a 10ft face though.
Not that it matters, frightening is frightening and everyone’s experience is different.
Yeah I thought that was standard to measure from the back.
As above, anything 4-5 feet upwards will level you if you try to walk through it.
I was surprised by the location of the swim entry to the rocks. Given the swell, people were just being thrown straight into the rocks when they got hit by the first wave.
You and Matt have experience of this with windsurfing / surfing / swimming in it.
I’m a plodder swim wise 1:10 full. 33 min half but don’t come out knackered at all.
There is no way I would have got in as I said the other day, a few people on other sites started to bait me … no wonder I have anger issues ! Lol.
It seems most people who did get through did breast/ crawl to the first buoy but as Matt said if you swim s 2 kph in a pool and its 2 k against !
Your static shitting yourself in a horrible dangerous environment …. Grim… AF
