Let’s hope for a mill pond and a safe race
Crap but competently safe. Well, I haven’t drowned yet
Normally 1:10ish in OW. 2017 Wales was slow at ~1:20.
You ll be reeet as they say here
1:10 isn’t crap?! Forecast doesn’t look too bad
Have the deaths been linked to the rough conditions yet though?
I remember having a brief conversation with Jo Murphy the iM emcee after Weymouth 2018 - we were “lucky” to have a swim that day, the waves weren’t huge, maybe a metre but were wild. I suspect If I was in the start pen last Sunday I would also have gone in. Easy to say that online though. Even Wales last year didn’t look too bad from the start line, was a lot lumpy about 100 metres in though!
I did Weymouth in 2018, shortened swim, but mainly due to off shore wind, biggest issue was cold, lots of people had to be taken off the bike course as they were too cold to continue
No, and they cant be until there is a post mortem and an inquest, and even then the coroner might not be able to say definitely that the conditions caused the deaths.
I expect I’d have done the swim; perhaps regretted it after the first few hundred metres! The thing is the self imposed pressure, when the swim is still going ahead. All that training and financial investment makes people take risks they wouldn’t otherwise.
I can totally see why that would be the case; but respect is the key for all of us. I do most of my kayaking alone, and have curtailed a few of my coastal trips when uneasy about the conditions. Of course ‘safety in numbers’ often makes us feel we’re safer than we are, but there is the knowledge you’ll be spotted by your oppos if/when you fall in!
Biggest waves I’ve raced in was at Redcar in 2021. I had to swim out breaststroke. I know a few people turned back. @jeffb I think you were there that year, how did you find it?
Yeah looking at the video I would be scared of that swim and a big part of me wouldnt want to do it, but then I would have the doubt of all the time and money spent on it, and other people are going in so why shouldnt I.
It should certainly have the Tenby organisers re-assessing their options & mitigations etc ahead of time. They have some flex with the two beach areas in town, divided by the headland. Even if they just make it an in & out wade down along one of the beaches. I appreciate that’s harder when you’re talking thousands vs hundreds.
‘what can we do to get people wet like in a Triathlon, but keep it nice and safe too’.
Yes, I was absolutely freezing on the bike and I wore a gabba, arm warmers and mitts. If I would have punctured that day it would have been game over.
Their decision to make us wait in the pen for however long it was didn’t help. Fortunately a mate had his Apple Watch on and bought myself and another mate cups of tea from a vendor on the seafront
I thought it was a high swell but not the big breaker’s that were in Cork. That beach is very long and flat, you could have almost walked it.
It was definitely challenging though.
They had some junior events at the LCW before the main swim. It was basically run into the water up to your knees, turn around, run back, then run 100m along the beach.
They could turn the swim into a run, but it’s on the beach and you have to wear wetsuit, swim hat and goggles.
I did Weymouth in 2018, I thought the swim was fine but I’m a half decent swimmer.
However, I was so cold on the bike even with plenty of extra clothing, couldn’t believe people were heading out of T1 in just a trisuit.
That would be me. Had to ride fast to keep warm
Coroner wouldn’t go that far in determining cause of death even if they could
I will caviat that I’m assuming their process is similar to UK
