Ironman Lanzarote 2019

Well done to those who completed this yesterday.

I looked at FvL’s winning splits.
Keep in mind he won Kona in 2013 and has won Nice five times, so he’s pretty damn good!

Swim 50:25
Bike 5:01:32
Run 2:53:23

That’s pretty telling of the bike course :scream::scream::scream:

Well done everyone! :muscle::facepunch::champagne:

Watched the live coverage…looked epic as usual. Ladies pro race was great, especially Nikki’s win , shame Emma Pallant had to withdraw could have been close.

Well done all. That medal is appalling. I don’t normally give a toss about medals but for £500 IM would be disappointed in that.

Right then who is in for 2020, assuming it happens. I am cleared hot so waiting for sign up to be available. Isn’t there normally priority registration at the finish line for next year? Anyone know if that was the case this year?

I’d love to do this one. Maybe next year of the date falls well for half term.

Not aware of priority but it doesn’t usually fill too quickly.
I had not done an Ironman race since I last did this in 2016. It seemed to me that there is a huge increase in the ‘bike porn’. Plasma, Speedmax seem to have the majority share, in fact the whole race just seemed more competitive.
I think I had forgotten just how hard these races are
1.07 swim which surprised me as I didn’t feel I swam hard, must have got good lines and pulled along in a group I didn’t get much clear water at all.
6.45 bike I was on a road bike no tribars, compact Chainset served me well only a few times I wanted more gears. I found the cross winds quite unsettling, I descend very poorly and always loose a lot of ground on technical descents.
4.26 marathon, I wanted sub 4 and after 8 miles that had gone, the leg out past the airport was very tough for me, last 3 miles felt better but that’s because the end was in sight…ish.
I did pass one Brit going down the donkey track with a puncture on his rear disc wheel that looked like bad luck, saw him later running well.

I was wondering about priority sign up as I have heard rumours of this being the last. Looking for clues

Great effort on the swim. I have always found to cross winds hard there. I am a big rider and they still blow me about. Not ridden a TT bike with deep wheels either.

Well done - They seemed to fluff the start “no countdown as we’re late” I got my feet in the water at 7:02 then all I saw was foam and fists in the first lap, didn’t get to enjoy the clear deep blue waters until lap 2 and then only briefly.

I saw a lot of nice bikes, and a lot of people coming out of the water with me unlike IMUK so I’m guessing the “worlds toughest Ironman” attracts less newbies.

I’m only a five year TT member, I did say hi to you guys about 11pm as you were gathered a few hundred meters from the finish line and gave you a clap. I’m here with my son though so not on the beers

My support team (wife and kids) were stood next to some Brits whose husband was race over after about five minutes having been smashed at the swim start. I am amazed there are not more facial injuries from the swim in general, I am also conscious of not kicking if I feel someone close or at the turns, why do so many swimmers kick hard at the pinch points.

My son was watching and said several people “gave up just after starting the swim, and came back”. I got hit in the head a couple of times, once right in my eye, and kicked in the balls but I had actually expected it to be worse.

There seemed to be a traffic flow problem like you get on motorways where if one person slows down, the ripple effect is a traffic jam. Then all the pushing and shoving started.

In fairness I caught a few people, one guy got pretty upset about it. I don’t think anyone was being aggressive though, just too many people in too small a space. :man_shrugging:t2:

I didn’t kick at all, but I used to at the pinch points to get out of there quicker.

I have it on good authority that they’re moving it to Blackpool.

I have an e mail saying pre registration is open race is 23 May 2020 if interesred

I’d love to give this one a go but I wouldn’t be able to get the Friday before off work, so registration would be all but impossible.

After years of shift work I now am school term time only, great fir holidays but they don’t like me taking time off during the school term.
Might have to look for something else …

I’m in the same boat.

It has been quite weird, being a competitive triathlete was seen as a positive quality when I was speaking to the Head about the job he wanted me to do, now it seems as though it is viewed as a PITA.
When I applied for the leave to come here it was 1 1/2 days off, unpaid, no cover needed. It was refused, I got a bit shirty (coz I can be a bit of a dick sometimes…) then it got approved but with everything booked up I was coming anyway, let’s see how negotiations for next year work out when we return.
Indeed seems a good job site…

With three kids term time is a big constraint for us too. Luckily the years attendance stats were published the week before we came out (two days off school :scream:)

If you were allowed to check in/register on Saturday, race Sunday it would be a no brainier for triathletes with kids. Or do all the preamble remotely, it’s not like you’re going to fly all the way to Lanza without visiting a few bars and restaurants.
