A doctor mate was telling me yesterday that the transmission factor (forget now what he called it) for corona is that each person will pass it on to 2.4 people, which is the same as flu. Diseases like measles have factors 3 or 4 times as high.
What?.. in modern Britain?.. surely the wealthiest will get first call on any vaccinations long before its wasted on the poor elderly or their feral northern offspring…
Cynical?.. moi?
Did Greta manufacture this ala Thanos from the Avengers movies? Nobody was listening so she took things into her own hands (yes, tounge firmly in cheek)
Critical workers = wealthy
Elderly = Anyone over 55 with a big pension
At risk = Anyone who government can gain good PR from treating
Anyone with young boys will be fooked; we know how they hate to be hygienic
My Tri club does a trip to Riccioni every May, I’ve never been but must be in doubt at the moment.
On a slightly less gloomy note, we have decided, if a few stars align over the next couple of weeks, to head out to Lanza for a very long weekend over race weekend…if we do, let us know your race number, and we’ll reserve an extra large Ruta66 fuelled shoutout for you as you struggle by…
cold beer too ?
Couldn’t possibly comment as that would be outside assistance…
I remember the IMJ saga on that subject…
That’s the R number. Surely everyone’s been inspired to watch Contagion recently? I’d seen it before but enjoyed it more this time around, given the current events.
A colleague in Shanghai has been holed up at home with her husband and young kid for the past 4 weeks, schools there won’t open till May at least they said. She goes out every 3 days to get food.
Regardless of whether it will harm us badly, if it gets out of hand it’s going to impact our lives one way or another, it’s been eye-opening speaking to people in Shanghai about what a PITA this all is.
I watched that a couple of weeks ago, passed me by the first time round, but really interesting experiment.
Yeah, but she was an ‘absolute legend’.
well just leave it on the side of the footpath
I have 2 girls and they are no better.
Outbreak; I’ve seen that.
Update on the Ironman website seems to indicate a change to 1 lap swim.

EDIT: Added picture for convenience
Sure looks that way, goes a fair bit further along the coast, to be fair a couple years ago the tide pulled a few people across that far anyway so some people will have experience of the new course
That makes sense if they’re going to a rolling/wave start. The faster swimmers always used to lap the slower swimmers anyway, so the new starting protocol would have only made that worse with a 2 lap swim.
Having just ridden the course, here are some observations about Lanza
Descents: I’ve never been anywhere with such fast descents, I’m hitting 75kph+ on many descents, bikes handles very differently at these speeds, add on vicious cross winds, and its a real test of bike handling
Wind: Massive benefits of being aero almost all the time, even climbing, there is no shelter, wind is everywhere.
IM Course: The Final km 150 to 175 is a long descent then flat, with tail wind. If you can’t hold aero position at this point in the race, you are going to loose a boat load of time… its probably worth 10kph
Wheels, I’ve been trying 80mm and 30mm front wheel, 80mm is certainly faster, but the effort and concentration required to hold it in the wind is draining, for me 30mm is the way to go unless forecast is for really light winds
Climbs: Not really sure what the fuss is about, the climbs are mainly 3-5% gradients, I think there is one climb with some pieces at 10% but really not much. Everyone seems to complain about the climb up Fire Mountain, it is dead straight for 8km with a head wind all the way, however, I found it easy to just get into a nice rythm, and zone out while climbing.
Roads: Mainly fine, however, there are some streches that are shockingly bad… almost gravel track qualits. There is one section, just after Haria, there is a 12% descent on a truely terrible surface, with a sharp left hand turn half way down. I missed the turn as I couldn’t slow down enough. So far I have had 2 punctures, which is a concern for the race
