Yep, me too…
Standard training plan then Symes?
This is a tricky situation for people entered. Whether it goes ahead or not it looks likely no one would be getting any swim training in this side of March at the earliest.
Feel for you guys. May seems to be in that borderline region: most likely things will be much better but mass participation amateur events are one of the last in the queue to get OK’d and you have further issues with international travel and really BOTH UK and Canarias will need to be in a good place.
Awful lot has to go very well, but then old Bob (Hope) is still in the corner on a barstool…
If all else fails I think there’s a decent TT massive looking at May 2022…
I’ve got an entry deferred from 2019 but I’m simply assuming it won’t go ahead. Instead I’m focussing on the “local” Ironman distance race: Celtman. But who knows, Lanza may happen then I’ll be doing the last min booking thing along with many others I expect. I wonder if Ironman will relent to deferring again to 2022? That’s some ask financially.
I’m think I’m going to go ahead and train as if it’s happening. Worst case, come May will be all dressed up with no place to go. But probably better that way round than the other I guess.
I’m thinking of booking now so that I definitely have a slot for 2022(!)
Is that crazy?
You’ll look a prize plum if it goes ahead in May (possible Oct 21 as well).
Although if May 21 does go down the gurgler getting in May 2022 will be tough so I like your thinking!
Ah a pushback would conflict with Barca 21
Most likely is if you enter May 2021 and they pushback to Oct 21 you will probably (but not certainly) get offered either Oct 21 or May 22.
It looks like you can enter now and then defer. Seems a good way of making sure you’re there. I’m tempted now too.
… Was in lanzarote for a weeks break Dec 2019. Hadn’t swam in 3 months: the sea spat me out no sooner than I’d jumped in ( with a wetsuit ) couldn’t imagine doing that swim course with no swimming under the belt.
I guess Ironman are doubtful of any racing this year and need to borrow from next year and keep the masses interested.
I’d be very surprised if this goes ahead at all, was thinking last night is it even worth making any effort to train for it and am leaning towards screw it. 16 weeks to racking day, a few 50 miles on the turbo done and up to 13 miles run 2 or 3 times recently, no bricks, no meaningful swimming since summer 19.
Could get the swim done with 3-4 weeks of 3 swims a week, one of which being OW. Probably drag my arse up to race distance on the bike/run by then too but it would be a ‘get round’ day and I’m not sure I want that.
On the flip side, just to be ‘racing’ would possibly make the ‘get round’ seem worth it.
Really confused brain here!
Tricky one isn’t it.
I’m thinking 80%+ not going ahead now. Certainly if it was next week, I don’t think “to do an ironman Officer” would count as a valid reason at the airport.
But until we get notice of cancellation I’m going to carry on training like it’s happening. Otherwise I wouldn’t be confident in my ability to even get round. In fact, even WITH training 9-12 hours per week, which is my plan, I’m not super confident in my ability to get round. Haven’t ridden for more than 4 hours in about 10 years & don’t recall feeling like a run straight away on any of those occasions either
However if the race is definitely postponed I’ll back off, as my original plan calls for a 4+h ride each month, Feb thru May, plus 2 “big days” in March and April. That madness is something I feel like I only have in me once every decade or so so will probably put them off until the new date is known.
Pools are open in Spain, so all the Spaniards will swim away from us
Also cos they won’t have been vaccinated yet
La Santa are promoting the 4day MTB stage race that has been moved to the end of May. It was originally going to be January so fingers crossed that IM Lanza can happen
And Romania apparently, not sure how many of them race though
think its borderline for all pre JULY events but come on lets crack on and keep our eye on the ball ,i am using the lack of swimming time to work on a extra bike and run time ,i reckon worse case 15 mins slower if hardly any swimming before end of May !!
can you imagine how much slower u would be if only got to ride your bike 4 weeks before Lanza.
think lanzarote needs the race to bring in people , off course it will only happen if its safe to do so
