Ironman Lanzarote 2021

Not too bad, cooler than Switzerland. Windy, but no surprise there

It’ll probably feel cooler than that on the northern section of the bike course because it usually starts out cloudy on that side of the island.

Conversely, the run will probably feel hotter because there isn’t much shade until a lot later in the day.

It’s a bit busy on the IMUK chat, but quiet over here on the Lanza thread

Taper is going really well. I took a 2 week taper. Dropped 40% in week 1 and even more this week. I am feeling amazing, Fatigue built up over months and months of training is ebbing away, but I am still keeping a mix of high and low intensity workouts, on a much lower level, and I am feeling fresh.

Bags are packed, filled in a ton of Admin on the website regarding check in etc. Naturally I am feeling a few nerves, but overwhelming feeling of confidence.

Forecasts keep getting windier, I guess that this is good for me, anything that makes the bike course more of a challenge should work out well

Getting bike ready yesterday, thought I should check the chain… oops its absolutely buggered. Luckily I have a spare chain, bit of a faff cleaning it and waxing, but now running smooth

Good luck Matt, will keep an eye on it.

As already said good luck. I’m looking forward to tracking you and seeing what all that training gives you

Yup!
I’ll be tracking all afternoon.

Bike for show

Run for dough :+1:t3:

100%

What does that actually mean? I have heard it loads but am not sure

People have a tendency to over train on the bike and under train the run, advertise their bike splits and hush up when it comes to their run. Then there were the uber bikers in the pro field couldn’t swim much, couldn’t run much but got loads of attention with their amazing bike splits despite not actually winning.

Ive heard it said that there aren’t any uber bikers any more, they’re all brilliant.

I first heard it from Chris McCormack, after he had a run battle with Raelert in Kona. Running is where the money is won. I also think it’s a good reminder to train hard on the run element, it is too easy to keep riding especially with the advent of Zwift and other indoor platforms but for long course to be competitive you gotta put in the miles on your feet.

Good luck @Matthew_Spooner

If you get to post some photos of the pre race stuff / general ambience that would be amazing- for those of us who can’t be there this year :frowning:

Your training and journey has been pretty inspirational, hope you get the race you want. Also loving your positive self talk, which seems realistic and deserved.

Go get it :swimming_man: 🚴‍♂ :running_man: :volcano:

Go get ‘em Matt!

Have you flown out yet?

It’s a appropriation of the golfing mantra “Drive for show, put for dough”. Much the same idea, a long hit down the fairway may look good on the TV, but not missing from 6ft on the green is what makes the difference.

Yes I’m waiting for a taxi. Many people with bike bags, including quite a few Brits on flight from London

Erm…pardon what?

Guessing they won’t be quarantining?
I don’t even know the rules anymore

No requirement to, it’s only on return, and having a party in ibiza or a recovery week riding around majorca woud be a better option than coming to the UK for a quarantine.
