Ironman UK 2019

I did my last 70.3 to very strict bike conditions… and it went really well…but that was flat…

I guess “ I only wish I’d biked a bit harder”
Said no one ever at 30km of a full distance marathon …!?

Hopefully stick to the plan

Exactly. Bike “too easy” and have 42km to make up for it.
Bike too hard and that mistake has 42km to multiply.

Would it be possible to bike too easy on that circuit…?!

Steady as she goes all the way, especially down sheephouse!

Run isn’t flat anywhere, gradual up out of town, gradual down back. Park is hilly, maybe 4-500m?

Felt flat to me… I was going very very slowly …?!

First check of forecast. Couldn’t be better really!

Reckon this might be the last running of Bolton…

That looks mint.

So long as Freddie is there with him, too :ok_hand:t4:

I’m Welsh …

But want a fast one next year…

That ain’t Tenby…!

Does look a good do!

You pays your money…

Good climber… fast descender…!?
Taylor made for an experienced in shape war horse like yourself …?!

Sure it will be an experience and with zero aspirations of Wales or Lanza I’m sure it will be my slowest too…

I’m signed up for this. Like many, I’ve had mixed feelings over the last few months. When I was thinking about what to sign up for last year there were loads of others I preferred the look of but the added expense was too much to justify on what would basically be a holiday without the wife and kids - so I settled on Bolton.

All the talk about the revised bike course made my heart sink but when I went and rode it wasn’t actually as awful as I’d imagined. It’s even picturesque in parts although it’s certainly not a ‘nice’ course and I had those Escher sketches in my mind – the optical illusions where it seems as if the staircase go upwards forever without ever coming down. As others have pointed out lots of draggy (although not too steep) uphill’s and then short sharp descents where you can’t get any speed up and where there will be a lot of crashes. Even the few sections where you do find yourself doing downhill and picking up speed you’re then diverted off onto more gravelly side roads and your speed vanishes again.

I’ve got good memories from Bolton in 2015 so I know that it can be a good day even if the weather is rubbish (which it was in 2015) and even if Bolton ain’t got that continental glamour. In 2015 I did the bike course in 5.23. I’m not that far off that kind of bike fitness this year but I’m still not sure if I’ll be able to keep it under 6 hours on Sunday.

Weather looks like it might be decent which should make for a slightly easier day for the St John’s Ambulance lot.

Just a couple more manic hours left at work then I’m heading down there tomorrow morning and actually looking forward to it after all.

Good luck to you Mungo2 and any others round here who are doing it.
