Ironman UK 2021

There is.
ANYONE can defer to 2022, or get a race credit until 2024.

Again +1 I’m with you on this.

As much as I love winding up people when the swim is cancelled I do agree it is the event you are racing, not the distance. So yes, cancel the swim by all means if necessary, but don’t make it optional - that’s going to fuck with everyone’s heads.

Can they? For IMUK? I thought that was only for races that had been shifted back? Maybe I missed something seeing as I’m not signed up for this one.

Missed the thread? Are IMUK making the swim optional? Hardly a safety issue. That place is a duck pond, and you don’t sink in neoprene. Just round the stragglers up with a big net or something and tow them back in

No, they (IMUK) sent an email saying you can defer (I entered in 2019 )

Also, c’mon, be fair!
113 is a small race, no tattoo and that was last year when the world was in a different place.

IMUK have offered loads of options, to allow people to be prepared and actually cover the distance.

I’m not a fan of races within races - and yes, that goes for relays at Outlaw, too.
I love a good mass start me :muscle:t3::+1:t3:

Here’s the email text:

We’ve taken the feedback on board and are pleased to be offering you a once-off option to decide whether you want to complete the swim at the race you are registered for. While we will continue to host all three disciplines of swim, bike and run, we understand that some athletes have had little to no swim training due to circumstances outside of their control. It will remain an individual decision for each athlete to select the best option for them based on their personal situation.

Athletes in European and South African races who select to race as bike & run athletes will continue to have an exceptional race experience but will not be eligible for age group awards and cannot qualify for IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship slots. Your decision will be final, this means you cannot opt back into the swim portion on race day. Please check your race website on how the bike & run option will work as well as the FAQ before making your selection.

Fair enough. Guess it’s fair. Has been a fairly exceptionally odd year

Is that recent? As I say, I wasnt aware of deferral options for any races that hadnt had their original (revised 2021) date shifted. It would make me optimistic I might get similar for Vitoria!

Because some people will be up for it, both in fitness terms and through the desire to actually be an ironman (I have absolutely no interest btw, Kona completely destroyed any interest in the event for me!)

It also almost certainly helps them run a more distanced event, which doesn’t help from an infection perspective almost certainly looks good.

I think it’s a good response, and I applaud them.

Yes, but there are a whole different set of expectations around the Ironman brand; from both a cost and bragging rights point of view

I’ll wait to hear how they’re timing the swim start and the bike start, but it sounds like a mess to me.

Even if you deferred your self last year ?

Three of us did and as I understand it, we have to race or loose our cash?

I’m racing what ever they put on, a tough sportive at this rate !

But one person really could do with deferring ?!

Maybe they should make the non-swimmers run laps around the lake until the first swimmers leave the water?

There was talk of cancellation of the swim in 2018 too. The algae I think - would have been out and out riots. Folk were posting mental stuff about how to add in the extra 10 or so miles. I was just fucking glad it was shortened. I’m not the best cyclist - truth be told I’m a national health hazard

And drink two pints of lake water

So is that a tacit admission that you’re not an Ironman?

Tacit…

Is that a Southern word …?!

Haha, you’re on a roll! I believe even in the north, there are schools and universities. Below average obviously :poop:

Actually, I was at the pub with a group the other week, and one guy who’d lived in Plymouth for a year described it as a shit-hole; I tried not to flinch! It’s got some crappy parts, but on the outskirts where I lived, it was great growing up with the River Plym, the forests, nearby beaches and Dartmoor.

Slightly off topic but very strangely I be just had a cryptic refund email from Active.

I entered Mallorca, it got scrubbed and I took the voucher (good for a Spanish only, race up to end of 2024 and I quite fancy IM VG but in a couple of years). But now this email has come. I think it is a way of backhandedly charging me 60 odd Euros for the original entry.

Was anyone else stupid enough to enter?
