And as for the Bolton do what you like I predict everyone will do what they like and get the same medal. If you are after a slot or an award then your results will be checked.
All of IMJ who entered will call them selves an Ironman regardless of their swim status.
IMUK is on 4th July.
Two weeks after Covid has been defeated in England.
There’ll be no masks, no distancing and lots of lamp-post licking.
RE: The swim.
They’ve offered LOADS of palatable options, this is diluting the brand - creating an “easy” option.
I don’t like it.
It’s also about them keeping the money and not having a load of deferrals.
Maybe the non-swimmers can do it on the Saturday instead?
I did Hamburg in 2018 and they had exactly the same issue with algae as the Summer had been stinking hot. In the end they pulled the swim on the Saturday. Instead we started with a 6k run then the 180K bike and then the marathon.
It was weird and tbh I didn’t really enjoy it. We were all gutted to miss the swim as that is part of the whole experience
I have a nice medal from the day but I don’t feel that I did an Ironman. I’m just glad it wasn’t my first IM
What would you prefer? Some people choosing not to do the swim - whilst those who want to can - and a viable event that takes place? Or so many deferrals that the race doesn’t go ahead at all?
Can’t really see why people are getting bent out of shape by this
Latest, some Canadian, “its a good idea, I haven’t swum in 18mths”
So travelling thousands of miles in a global pandemic having not swum for 18months as all the pools are shut because of Covid, and wanting a bike run instead . Just defer FFS
I think it just shows how unprepared many are for swimming 3.8km and that they really can’t swim before signing up, so some issues with pools and it really is game over. It’s not about being elitest, fast or anything but just preparing for the challenge. I made a few posts on Simon Wards page a couple months back to show that the vast majority of ironman entrants are more interested in which £600 watch to buy rather than £10 a session adult swim lessons at the local leisure centre to race faster.
The policy is for lots of IM’s where covid isn’t defeated (and given they’ve stopped removing false positives from the cases now, we will never be free of it!) Could they have said "no swim option if you want it (other than in the UK) ?
