Ironman UK 2021

Going to try to make it out Sunday to spectate on Winter Hill (Sheephouse) as per tradition. Will be wearing my IMUK finisher shirt and will be with Mrs T and Oska if anyone is passing at high speed

I’ll be off the bike by then :+1:t3:

Timings I did for my wife as below.
Obviously, “worst” case is the worst case outcome with no accidents or mechanicals or blow ups :rofl:

It’s a best case worst scenario :man_shrugging:t4::boom:

Worst worst case is limping home in 14-17 hours :crossed_fingers:t3:

You dont mention the grape crushing section??

That’s because there’ll be no grape crushing :grapes::sob::boom::triumph:

My two long term injuries have come back to haunt me;

  1. Cricked neck. I’m currently moving my whole torso from the hips to look left and right. Aero head is fine, swimming will not be. More likely to be 70 minutes now

  2. left knee “twisted” I get this odd “clicking” thing at the back on those tendons, where they “pop” out on the lower part. This makes my knee cap at the front feel like it’s been turned about 15 degrees (like a dial). I can run, but adjust my gait, which makes my hip and foot ache.
    3km this morning felt okay, but 42km?
    Reckon that’ll be 4-4.5hrs now :sob:
    Or I might have to pull the plug at some point…

…we will see how it goes.
Just a shame they’ve waited until this week to rear their heads, as I know they’ll both settle down by next week :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Tell your Central Governor to let you make it through before he shuts you down.

If you start now, then it’s already over

What’s all this mumbo jumbo?
I felt it from Monday, but just put it down to taper madness, which has got progressively worse this week :cry:

Clothing;
It’s currently 16-18 degrees here and chucking it down…but it is absolutely roasting still :hot_face:
Wearing my Perfetto in this and I’ll cook!
I’ve stuck my lightweight Castelli camo jersey in the bag, too :thinking:

But I hate making decisions on race morning

Lol

Best laid plans ….

I think in “ bad” weather the more organised athletes go well.

Your certainly that, if it is biblical on the bike try and be aware of the others near you, there’s going to be drama I’m guessing tomorrow, stay away from it and get the race you deserve.

Taper?

It’s personal, but a northern lad like you should be fine in a single layer if it’s that warm with the climbs.

I’m only up because of the dog; shouldn’t you lot be having a lie in?

35 minute bike
15 minute jog

DONE :white_check_mark:

Car packed, racking at 9am.

It’s currently storms, so my bike is gonna be soaked :frowning:

:sweat_smile: nothing less relaxing than the day before an Ironman 🤷

Do they still do bike covers?

I’m about to butcher this but look it up

The Central Governor theory says that’s there’s a manager inside you who’s job is to protect you from doing permanent damage to your body.

When you see someone come a close second in a race, it’s because they “chose” to come second. Whether that was conscious or sub-conscious.

When you exercise and it hurts, that’s the CG telling you to slow down / stop as it thinks you’re gonna damage yourself.

It’s a theory to why sometimes you see people bury themselves, make it across a line and then collapse.

Their CG has allowed them to make it to the end, but then shuts them down to prevent further damage - Savaloy was a great example of this.

If you buy into the theory, then sometimes you have to have a meeting with the CG and lay out what you want.

For outlaw I took my pedals and chain off and fitted them race morning

Added faff but did save overnight soakings

Too late for Poet, but I saw Andreas Raelert used baking foil wrapped around his drivetrain in Hamburg. It didn’t rain though…quite the opposite.

Plenty of research to back it up as well.

I did one at Northumbria Uni, on a computrainer and they’d fiddled it so I was actually going 2% faster than my flat out virtual self from a week earlier and still beat it. Wasn’t far off the 5% one, they initially told me they were testing pacing strategies!
