DNF??
Seems to be an awful lot of DNF this year on IMUK journey every second post is from people who crashed/ injured or were timed out
It’s a tough old course a bit of wind and rain and there 13.8 mph dips and there done!
There all coming back next year though …
( I actually hope they all do)
Great report, excellent race and I think more to come. Chapeau.
Great report @Adam enjoyed reading that.
Bolton is a tough course no doubt about it and despite the fact that it’s not really a ‘destination’ race I’ve always thought that they put on a fantastic event.
Interesting what you heard about the roll downs. Seems like something is really changing as regards the allure of Kona (it was always crazy expensive but I think even more so now and putting petrol in the car and food in the table probably comes first for most folks). If that’s the same story at other races it provides the perfect conditions for them to take the decision to move the WC out of Kona.
Looks like you’re already back into the commuting so will look forward to seeing how your prep for Tenby pans out.
Great race report Adam
and well done ![]()
I picked up five prolific IMJUK posters last year followed them on the tracker and iirc 4 DNFd.
Fantastic Adam. Great write up as well. How did the P3 go?
define quick ParkRun? Time Please Gentleman
It was slow ![]()
so how’s that work then, can anyone who did Bolton get one?? (nb I don’t want one!)
It was slow
You keep saying that, but sub-19 isn’t slow.
he’s just patronising us Old Folk ![]()
My PB is 18.49 FFS
can anyone who did Bolton get one??
Last year (and I know we could not travel anywhere and lost a grand if Kona was cancelled etc) it was basically if you finished and wanted a spot, you paid.
The emails went out, wait 48 hours, if no reply, it rolled down.
My mate who I was in T2 with (I think when I saw you?) came ~85th in his age group and got a slot ![]()
This year, it was an in person slot allocation.
So you had to go to wherever to accept your slot.
But, like has been said above, cost of living and cost of getting to Kona seems to be impacting numbers over here in the UK.
Therefore, it seems like a case of put your hand up, pay, go to Kona ![]()
T2:
Made the most of my fortuitous racking spot and blitzed this. Feet out of shoes, leg over bike postie style, running over mount line making a beeline to my racking spot, into the tent, helmet off, trainers/visor on and go. Bosh, easy.

Remain 7th M35
fairplay that man, what a way to start the run. ![]()
my back always aches too much to even think about getting a trot on tbh
I’m surprised I stayed warm enough on the bike given your recap. I didn’t get cold but was never warm. just too busy working and suffering I spose, despite the showers. Fingers were fine.
He’s about to collect his M40 superpowers, so should be way faster tbh. He’s not allowed to slow down until he tips 45.
My PB is 18.49 FFS
Mine is still 20.03
Could do with focusing on it and actually picking a non-slow course.
Moved 5km time and replies to the proper 5km thread (link above)
Thanks for all the well wishes!
@gingerbongo - it’s interesting, the gruelling nature of that bike course definitely took a lot out of me. Would some longer runs have of some benefit? Yeah probably. But as you say my nutrition errors didn’t help there. Had it been a more rolling or flatter course I would have been confident of going harder for longer. Same for that run course too.
I think I will get a few longer runs in. Need to come up with a plan really it’s already not long.
@FatPom - P3 was solid, love riding that bike. I went with a rear disc. Up in the air if it helped or hindered but there were moments where the course is quick. Probably could have done with a bigger cassette - 28 was getting a fair amount of use on the last lap but saying that I wasn’t searching for an easier gear.
@Mr-me - Bolton completely won me over, like you say it’s not an exotic location but bloody hell what a course, that’s right up there for me. The atmosphere and crowds are fantastic and the locals really get behind you and the race. I’d definitely recommend it.
the northern aid station I was back to feeling right as rain at the end of lap two. The plan for the last lap was just to eat all the bars and chews I could get my hands on and hopefully avoid bonking.
I imagined this being stocked up with chips & gravy and some Morrison’s own brand cola.
Nice write up Adam, again very well done! Maybe some 27km runs in the build up next time? ![]()
