Ironman Wales 2022

From Dyfed Powys Police:

"IRONMAN WEEKEND |

We’re aware some people are planning to travel to Tenby to race the IRONMAN route this weekend, and while we understand people have trained really hard to compete, and are disappointed the race is cancelled, we are concerned about the impact of racing without any road closures or the usual support.

Our message, together with Pembrokeshire County Council, is:

:one: Please don’t cycle in packs – our roads make the best IRONMAN route because they are challenging. They are also likely to be busy, as visitor numbers are still high, and are therefore very dangerous.

:two: If you’re planning on swimming, please ensure the conditions are appropriate and your swim doesn’t risk others who may be called to help you.

:three: If you’re planning to take on that hill for the run, please consider the need for social distancing and give way to others. In part, the road is fast and the pavements are narrow.

We look forward to welcoming athletes and supporters back to Tenby next year."

I was wondering if it would have been this weekend or next. This time of year I always think ‘wish I was there/bloody glad I’m not’ in equal measure.

TBF to them they are being fairly realistic rather than just a blanket “do not come” message.

Just booked the closest ‘sensibly’ priced air b&b I could. Mile from the beach so not horrific.

Free cancellation up to sep 5th :man_shrugging:t2::crossed_fingers:t2:

You up near New Hedges?

Actually in Tenby.

Place looks pretty basic but I’ll take that if it means I can walk in on the morning

Bugger - cancelled last years accom. Everything in Tenby appears booked up. Stayed out of Tenby first year I did it :persevere:

Buy a brown robe and stay on Caldey Island?

Woo hoo! No need - brother had a room booked at the park hotel, but has since fitted out a camper van, so I can take his room and he’s happy to kip in van. Sorted

I know @Hammerer will say its not a problem as the race won’t go ahead anyway, but had a call from my accommodation and they’ve taken the decision to take on a local gvmt contract for the whole of 2021, meaning they can’t take guests for Ironman weekend. Understandable from their perspective for the guaranteed income, but bloody annoying from mine!

So no longer do we have two rooms right on the beach, I’m now scrabbling around for anything 🤦

There will be loads of cancellations coming up in August as people panic and drop out before balances need paying on rooms. I know that’s not ideal though.

Hotel bookings are mostly with free cancellation in Tenby so usually get booked up but there are always vacancys come race week as people cancel. This year’s a bit unique but I expect it’s the same unless there are schemes that make it beneficial not to open. I’m not racing but a bunch of mates are I I’m planning on heading over to support them & haven’t made a booking.

Plenty still out of town. First year I did it we stayed out past Pembroke. It wasn’t too bad. Just had to get up much earlier to get to the buses.

Actually scratch that - it was pretty bad.

My dad always seemed to manage to get last minute rooms at the park hotel.

There will be many more cancellations this year from non UK athletes not willing/able to travel.
