Are Ironman still using the 50 day cancellation policy?
That’s 24th July?
I’d be a touch heartbroken if it doesn’t go ahead.
Last competed an iron distance race in 2017. I’ve entered one every year from 2019

2K competitors, but how many supporters will you have there?
I’m not competing, but I’ve got a campsite booked & I know of other friends in a similar position.
But from everything I’m reading, all campsites and holiday accommodations are largely fully booked up right now anyway, because of the massive demand for “staycations”. Our rolled over Turkey trip at the end of the month is almost certainly going to be cancelled, and we’ve been looking for a domestic alternative. It’s nigh on impossible.
So having some full campsites and hotels in a tourist hotspot it probably not really changing much
I fear the issue with Tenby is the narrow streets, narrow path down to the beach etc - much harder to produce a credible ‘social distance’ plan than, say, Bolton.
Plenty of noise locally about ‘an Easter that never ended’ with massive visitor numbers ever since (so they don;t NEED Ironman) and a recent spike in Tenby.
Could do either way to be honest. Hope it happens, so I can enter 2022…
Im not sure I would do it if it went ahead still. I’ve relaxed my stance a little over the past few months but if they give me the “IMUK option” of deferring as I’m not confident then Id take it. I still think September we will be heading for another lockdown anyway because they seem to only be worried about cases now not “the science” and “protecting the NHS” .
What do you mean, sorry?
I can’t fathom it out (not being rude! Hard to convey in text speak)
That you wouldn’t do it because of Covid?
Or that you’d feel more comfortable doing it next year?
Or something else?
Same everywhere at the minute.
It was the same last year, too.
Tell you what, I’ll live in a tourist town then complain about tourists.

This was Whitby the weekend before lockdown was announced in March 2020, you know, when everyone knew it was coming and went for fish and chips
Wouldn’t go as I feel a bit selfish first. A weekend away on my own doing a race, having only had a “staycation” , risking bringing covid back (not that I care about myself) and also I chose Wales for the experience of the crowds, the “party” atmosphere, the finish line, not to race with no crowds socially distanced.
But that’s gonna be here forever.
Are you not going to go anywhere ever again for that fear?
But I agree on the “selfish” points :- I’m always thinking of the people at home when I go away to race (which is why I do local races for the most part)
Yeah - that latter part is hopefully still gonna be there for Bolton?
Did you see the BC Crit Races at Otley last night
Proper party!!!
no but that’s el ninos first week at secondary school so if I test positive and he misses 10 days of school I’d feel a bit bad, but generally I’m of the don’t give a shit camp now. We are going to a gala with ~180 kids per session this weekend (I was meant to race at Hever Castle Sunday but my life is playing second fiddle now especially as its a Swim England trial event and they haven’t raced in 18 months!)
Ah!
To me, that’s totally different now
You’re aware of a small risk, and for the sake of your child, you’d rather not
(He says, waiting for his LFT result before going up to Bolton in an hour or so…)
I’ve never raced this event before, but aside from the physical challenge, its the crowds and support that really sell it to me. I’d rather wait another year and experience it fully. (I’ve already deferred once due to injury so I cannot do it again)
I may still go if we don’t get options, I’ve already missed this race once due to injury in 2017 and another £400 down the drain I wouldn’t be best pleased, but its IM so I certainly ain’t expecting anything from them. i was shocked how accommodating they were with IMUK but equally shocked they didn’t immediately role out the same deal for IMW entrants.
I was able to get another deferral for Frankfurt to 2022 after emailing them, so it may be possible
In hindsight, I would have paid £400 to miss 2017.
It’s not so much a case of everything being full, I think that it’s more a case of everyone being there for the same reason. People visiting that weekend are more likely to be concentrated in town - especially for the swim & run - & not popping over to other tourist attractions. You just need to look at the crowds watching the swimmers run to T1 & the fantastic support on the run.
My pitch site was rolled forward - is that the correct terminology? - from last year & if I though my staying away would let the race go ahead I would, but Drakeford & Co have been more heavy handed than BoJo over the last 15mths.
Yeah, I do see that. And the approach of the Welsh government in general is certainly a cause for concern. Maybe I’m just trying to stay positive. I’m optimistic that with IMUK taking place in a town that was the hotbed of England’s most recent cases, pretty much in the lead up to the race, then hopefully IM Wales can ride that momentum
Not too sure possibly a race by race situation, Copenhagen are taking deferrals up to a fortnight before the event
I suppose there hasn’t actually been an Ironman race in the uk since September 2019!
