Ironman Wales 2023

Kind of, it’s a Paralane, which I think means ‘two roads’ in German. Definitely clearance for up to 32mm and has its own custom mudguards with hidden eyelets.

It’s nowhere near as aggressive as full on gravel bikes these days, I’d describe it as a ‘tall rounder’ really.

There was a guy who used the Bolton course for training, he was a cyclist and couldn’t swim.

He was using 30 mm tyres in 1018/19, they looked huge but he had them on something similar to what your describing.

He said there was little speed difference, he was quite quick between those and 23/35 mm on rough roads and loads more comfort, I think they were tubeless too.

Comfort is king for the long game, get some aero bars on there?! Lol

I might do, I have some and it has alloy bars, so no issue with clamping. Will look a bit weird though!

Second time down there we stayed in the royal lion I think it was called - on the high street. there’s a pub at the bottom - it’s at the corner opposite the premier inn - right next to the swim start. Has a big crack going up the outside

But it was absolutely fucking awful - carpet in the bathroom. Old spring beds, Fcking awful mattresses. Place was a total shithole. Lift only went so far then the most erratic step conglomeration ever seen - conducive to accidents. We moved a day or so after the race to near where that nice terrace bar is at the end of the beach, beyond the finish line, down on the beach.

But still preferable to when stayed out beyond Pembroke first time

I’ve never ventured much beyond the finish line, wouldn’t that be a dead end, as you’d have the T1 car park after that wouldn’t you?

The Atlantic own a little terrace across the road from the hotel (I think it’s theirs) and 2018, they has sub contracted a pop up burger place and bar to operate there. It did smell nice but after my race, I was to knackered to walk through the crowds to a gap in the barriers to get to it.

Burger at the end… ?!

Despite being a 30 year vegetarian … boo!

You could be looking at the 14.5 club !

Bolton’s still tougher. Lol

I’d pre bought a baguette which they put in their fridge. Once I’d showered and went back to the lounge, I grabbed that, bought a pint and chatted with some other finishers. Next thing I know I’m being woken up by one of them as it was 12.30am and I was in the chair with the half eaten baguette still in my hand. :see_no_evil:

They still had that little bbq there this year.

Was mighty tempting to sit there in the sun on Saturday and sink a few jars!

I don’t think that’s the case for Wales, mainly because it’s such an early KQ for the following year. From memory, all slots bar one male AG were taken by the top few athletes this year (the AG that was said to roll to something like 99).

There’s a bar, restaurant further down on the beach. It has a terrace outside with seating. It’s really nice. If you walk along the wall eventually there’s a ramp down to it. It’s kinda tucked away

Just looked it up - salty’s beach bar, south beach

The Atlantic - I think that’s the one we stayed at post race. Yeah there’s a nice little space outside also.

I had lunch in that place off of south beach back in 2017 - funnily enough I was looking for it this year but forgot it was tucked away around the corner

Thanks Toby. Thinking about it, that might be where you pick up the footpath for the back of Kiln Park? We stayed there for one LCW and I can remember walking into town via a beach path.

Easier I guess just to walk along the beach lol

It’s a hop skip and a jump from that concrete jetty where the boat trips to the monk island set off from. That’s a funny place - have you been over?

Yeah I can’t remember where that path came out TBH. Strange though, given how many times I’ve stayed there that I’ve never really gone beyond the finishing arch. (only to pick up my bags and bike  )

Many a school trip to Caldey Island! Good memories of running away from the monastery and just hanging out on the beaches instead! :joy:

We got suckered in to buying about 30 quids worth of chocolate which wasn’t that great. Lovely walk around the island though.

I hadn’t realised there was anything there at all. My main landmarks are the pasty shop behind the church and that cafe that does jacket spuds the size of footballs on the high street

Right, I’ve talked myself down off the ledge. I really want to do this race, one day, but next year’s not for me. Really excited for all you people doing it, but for various reasons, next year doesn’t really work. Will focus on the long cycling stuff and visit this thread with longing.
