Ironman Wales 2024

Or you relocate to Pembs. It’s WAY better than the NW anyway.

Or Devon as an option.

Any idea how long it might take to sell out?

And are Ironman EU as good/persistent as IM Oceania at sending out recruitment emails at 75%, 90%, 95% etc? Usually for each tier too before a price rise.

Are we going to have a TT smackdown/meet up for this. With this years weather, next year will be biblical so may be the last

I’d added this as a potential for 2024

How does the bike course compare to IM UK - slightly more elevation?

definitely more elevation in the swim, hotter than Hamburg and windier than Kona

Aren’t you forgetting the rip tides?

I was going to mention those after the jellyfish and sharks.

Stangely, this isn’t in my diary.

Not mine :joy:

Although for anyone considering it I presume it has the early entry benefits for deferrals or transfer to another race?

What’s the cutoff for deferrals or transfers ? Is it something ridiculous like 90 days?

45 days but my mate who was supposed to be doing Wales with his son got ill and about 2 weeks before the race asked IM who have let them both defer until next year, so worth bearing in mind but not rely on it. I’m now being badgered to do it again next year, whereas I have needed a few years for the pyschological scars to heal before going back

I might come and do this next year

but as a TO :joy:

I’m waiting to see if a calm down a bit, about entering. A bit like @Poet has sort of said on the Hamburg/Copenhagen thread, it’s tempering my current fervour to do another IM, with the reality of coping with all the stuff that will inevitably go wrong over the next year.

@FatPom has said a few times it’s ok to be an ex-triathlete and I almost am ok with it. I would be totally fine if I hadn’t had my dnf in Switzerland. My only triathlon dnf since my first oly in 1989. I don’t have anything to prove really, I’ve got two long course finished under my belt; not stellar finishing times but that’s fine. And I’ve done loads of halfs, which I’ve really enjoyed. There’s no doubt that reading the TTers’ reports from this year’s event has rekindled a need to do one more, so that I can walk away on a more positive note. IMCH was four years ago, so I really should have let it go, by now.

The reality is, is that I’ll probably be mainly walking the marathon. My feet are not good so any form of consistent running almost definitely won’t happen, unless I find some magic bullet to get them sorted. Very unlikely. I’ve thought I could go back and do the Outlaw. I really enjoyed it in 2017, but the thought of walking around the lake is not exactly selling it. It sounds like Tenby at least has a great atmosphere that will make that part of the day ok.

I can’t see me doing any really structured training. I’ve come off Zwift and I’ve decided all my cycling will be commuter miles on the way home as both kids will have left home, so I should have a couple of hours most days to get something in. Throw in a TTowel type hurtbox 50 at the weekends, a monthly 200k audax and I reckon I’ll be right.

I’ve been thinking about this event and pretty much about nothing else for the last 72 hours and I just want to be sure that I won’t regret it, or worse, resent it, 6 months down the line.

Apology for the rambling post. Just trying to get my head straight and decide if I really want to do this, or really need to do it.

My Wahoo recorded 3277m at this years Bolton - Tenby is around 2500m

This years Bolton was nails though

Most of the climbing in Tenby is in the two lap section of the course with only a few minor climbs on the loop out to Angle.

If no matter what race you do you are likely to be walking a fair bit of the marathon then you will blend in very well as there will always be someone else walking near you at wales. At the start of the marathon when it was confirmed i was in for a very long day and i got my head around it ji ust needed to chip away. 6.5hrs wasnt fun but i did have an hour in hand which was a nice buffer. I definitely hadnt ridden enough big hilly rides and would say that these are really important for wales.

I deferred this year so either enter for 2024 or loose the fee I guess. So I have slipped in and will now go radio silence while I fence sit. It will be cold wet and back to the real deal but to be fair that suits me better.

If it wasn’t for the race reports I probably wouldn’t be considering this but I ain’t getting any younger!

I got an email yesterday saying over 2100 athletes already signed up for 2024 ! Unsure what the limit is but wouldn’t think it is much more. Because I now have 3 friends signed up and possibly a 4th about to, it has half crossed my mind to do it again, but wouldn’t consider singing up this side of Christmas (I signed up in Jan this year), when I guess it is likely to be sold out.
