Ironman World Champs Nice Sept 10th

My memory of IM Nice is that there was quite a few spectators at the start/finish end of the course but that it thinned out as you got further along. There’s a busy beach alongside the course, so there’s a constant stream of people crossing the course to get to it, but most of them didn’t seem that interested in watching the race.

There’s no shade on the course until later in the day, so it’s not great for spectators standing around for hours

I recall many years ago reading that a TSS of around 300 for the bike puts you in a good position for a decent run. :white_check_mark:

I just need to lose a ton of weight and up my power to 322w over 180km. Simples.

Pretty similar to my numbers :joy::joy::joy:

Interesting info on Joe’s race on the Oxygen Addict Pod with Andy Blow from PF&H. He spoke to Joe the day after and seems that Joe was putting out really great bike power but got to the top of the first climb and was 15 mins down…he was putting the wattage down but losing loads of time…looking at whether there was an issue with bike causing additional resistance - bearing etc? His head then went towards end of bike due to the issues and he didn’t fuel properly then set off fast on run (probably too fast) and then blew in 2nd half.

I know there’s always going to be a suggestion of blaming the tools but Joe’s ability doesn’t leave him 30mins down at end of bike.

I know a guy in the Canaries; interested?

That image proves my point of how misguided TSS is as a metric, a 180km ride is not 50% more fatiguing than a marathon (i know the run will be at a lower intensity due to the bike but its still way out)

If you do it as ‘TSS by time’ then the run will be more intensive though.

I’ve always said this, so largely ignored that metric.

It will give me more tss for a 2hr pootle on my bike than a 60 min flat out hilly run for example. Whereas they’re miles apart in terms of effort and recovery required.

yes looks time based, which for me needs a rethink, a cycling based metric fitted around multisport rather than being a realistic measure of overall fatigue.

Was the airport end basically still used as one great pissoir?

It didn’t seem that bad this time, not as bad as I remember from 2019.

I steered clear of the chemical khazi’s though :joy:

I just mentioned that to Mrs FB who has grim memories of them from 2008 when temps were mid-30s. she gave an involuntary shudder at the memory!

For reference, I believe I got it from here - probably about 10+ years ago.

At least the toilets have chemicals!

I’ve done hot weather races where the toilets don’t have chemicals, so there’s just a mountain of other people’s shit :nauseated_face::nauseated_face::nauseated_face::nauseated_face:

In Wales one of the portaloos on the run out of town was leaking and it’s contents running down the hill. The stench from that was more than a little grim.

Oh man, yeah. That was proper fruity!

I remember those portaloos previously overflowing (it doesn’t help that they are on a slope). And for those of you who finished in daylight, it was a really bad stench in the dark. I said to some kids walking up the road late on not to walk in the water because it wasn’t water !

Cycling Power based TSS includes TSS that you get simply for existing, laying on the sofa will give you 30TSS per hour or something, pace based running TSS does not. hence the problem.
