Presumably courtesy of his wife’s Doctor’s salary; he must be practically minimum wage as a Pro Ironman

Skipper earned £72,000 just in prize money last year, nevermind YouTube, podcast, sponsorship ± appearance fees/sub-7 stuff. He’s earning a lot more than she is!

Think he’s done pretty well for himself the last few years TBH

Probably not worth much, if anything, but agree with the overriding principle. Also his “salary” will involve lump sums, if you havent got to worry week to week (due to another salary coming into the house) makes a nice down-payment on a property.

True, but what comes out of that 72k? What would come out of your 72 if you travelled the world and had to pay the appropriate tax and have a pension just for starters. You need a huge YT/social media following to make any money from that.

Oh sure, you can say “How do you make a small fortune out of racing long distance triathlon? Start with a large fortune” :joy:

But if you were to line up all long distance pros by their earnings I think Skipper would be much nearer the Frodeno end of the line than the other end

Yeah, I always got the impression in Triathlon (certainly LD) there were 2-3 ‘higher’ earners, then everyone else was getting by with fingers crossed. Frodeno must have been the top earner in the last 5-10 years.

I wonder how mortgage lenders take to the athlete financial profile as well.

Well i ‘might’ win 200k in prize money next season, that’s the plan. Or I may dnf every single race and come away penniless.

Not to mention “I plan to retire at 40”

… But it’s ok. I’ll sell some generic coaching plans and some team kit with a quirky, hilarious version of my name on it. The AGers will lap it up.

I doubt if any pro triathletes earn anything like enough money to “retire” on when they stop competing. They all end up falling back on whatever they did before turning pro or they start coaching businesses.

The same would be even more true for Lottery-funded Olympians in most sports

Pretty sure Brownlee has

Do you think? Even if he’s got a couple of million in the bank that’s not going to be enough to retire on in your 30s :man_shrugging:

It would depend on the standard of living you’re expecting. I’d have thought £2M would be more than enough of the average person? What’s the average wage these days, I assume under £30k?

You should be able to generate an income from that which would be fine for most people, assuming you completely own your home.

Why would he keep it in the bank when he could invest it in property, for example

20 x 100 k houses all rented at 600-650 a month?

Jesus I’d take those figures all day.

He lives in Yorkshire, he could probably retire on £2.50 and a packet of pork scratchings.

Or send the misses back to her banking job.

But I’m pretty sure AB is not scratching around for a pension. He has enough irons in the endorsement fire to keep him in flat caps and ferrets for a few years yet. As with most of these things, the successful ones are the ones that can trade off their name well after the sport stops. AB is still the name of triathlon to most of GB public. Even if Yee wins Paris, don’t think he will replace him unless he can find a younger brother to race with.
