Joe Skipper

An education maybe for the odd child but its not rven as big as tri really, unlike Australia where the swimmers are rock stars.
Kid from my club went Mt Kelly in September, no scholarship, think you need 660 or 690 FINA pts just to be allowed in. Its “only” 11k a term, not bad for full boarding and you save 150pm swim fees also, and feeding a teenager training 4hrs a day  he just came 5th in national summer champs this week with a 2:07.05 (iirc) 200fly.
As for elites like Rebecca Addlington, Mark Foster or Adam Peaty aside, (who moved to Derby at 14) alk celebs now also, wonder how much James Guy, Tom Dean or Duncan Scott are worth though

How old is Peaty?
‘Cos the pools in Derby were shit when I lived there.

Has the 50m one at the new Moorways/Velodrome even opened?

It’s a right schlep down to Luffbra, too.
Ain’t doing that at 4am

Does Peaty still do all that? Didn’t Foster threw his toys out of the pram when British Swimming got a new coach who felt that the multi-times world champ and record holder for 50m free and fly ought to be doing a few more 0430 3hr sets of back and breast with the rest of the team.

Must have shifted a few books too. I have yet to go in a charity shop which doesn’t have a couple of copies on the shelves.

So we have a Joe Skipper thread, but no mention that he won IM Lake Placid last week?

It was on the pro tri thread :+1:

He’s just posted a video all about the Endless Pool he has at home. It’s 18 minutes long and the first 14 minutes are pretty much spent talking about the price. Let’s just say I won’t be getting one soon, or indeed ever.

Endless Pool must be thrilled about a review like that

Very honest review that. Dentists only.

Did his IM Lake Placid win cover the cost? I suspect not…

The £50k-odd to buy the pool is bad enough, but the £2k per month to run it is the real killer :flushed:

Not watched the video; not sure I could last 18 mins.

We heard it here first folks

So £1k a swim so far having used it 50 times; the economics of it are baffling. How many David Lloyd memberships is that.

I’ll take a Porsche 911 and the aforementioned DL membership.

It’s put me right off

As his eBay advert, it’s not a winner is it?

Some of the maths and logic is dubious, but I did the maths myself and realised that hiring a chauffeur to carry you to and from a pool would be cheaper and more enjoyable.

He didn’t mention the neighbours complaints he’s had either - they aren’t huge fans of the massive noise it creates…

One of the comments says they pay that a month for gym membership, but at least they get CV/weights kit. Where the heck charges that a month?!

The £1k per month to heat and run imho shows how much the UK/ energy importing countries are being milked.

I imagine this can’t be great for Endless Pools business model, unless perhaps they are shifting their focus to markets where energy is cheaper.

However I guess this is a big part of the motivation for countries like UK to switch to greener/ more secure energy sources? Perhaps if fusion and new superconductors come good we can all have an endless pool

Although tbh I wouldn’t want one even then, think of the hassle of cleaning and maintenance. Outsource all that to David Lloyd

I cant even keep a bbq maintained.

I am thinking about a hot tub. Maybe I should stop those thoughts.
