Estonians.
Ah, no, sorry. That’s the other option on offer, so they’ll all be in Tallin, along with all the other people who have flown in on non existent flights.

…and therein lies the rub.
I’ve been saying this for a while but I’m keen to simplify things. Triathlon is a complicated sport, logistically, financially, time and also in terms of the space it takes up at home. Given those complications and the added layers of getting back to some form of racing, for me, it’s a headache that I don’t want to deal with.
I really like my TT bike and have been convincing myself to keep it for TTs and duathlons but my work life is about to get more complicated and time restrictive, so I do ask myself if I need all these toys. I think that I invent reasons to keep them, rather than having an honest conversation with myself about why.
I’m in the situation now where I ‘do the thing because I have the stuff’ and not the other way around.
I’m loving the excursion into trail running and the events and people. Really keen to do more XC riding and exploring. Given that some bikes are getting very versatile now, with some fast gravel bikes that do a decent job on the road, I’m wondering about a ‘do it all’ road type bike and the XC bike.
Of course, resale value is in the gutter, especially on rim braked bikes, but for me, it’s more about head space. If I have more more bikes I feel compelled to use them, maintain them all, and that costs time and money.
I’m coming to the conclusion that doing more with less and just exploring different endurance pursuits will be the way forward.
One thing COVID has taught us, is to appreciate life’s simpler pleasures IMO. Running the trails and riding with mates looms large in my future.
I have triathlon on a planned hiatus too, although likely it will extend another few years. Cycling daily at the moment. Haven’t run since April. Swam a few times for pleasure. Sold the TT bike but bought a gravel bike to replace it.
2021 and 2022 for me: visit some amazing places and explore them on my bike.
I got my refund for Boston today, exchange rates must have stayed fairly consistent as it’s only about £1.50 down on what I paid.
Just need KLM to do the flight voucher.
I’ve Vitoria goes ahead, then that’s ideal for Boston. Can properly commit if I don’t have an Ironman 10wks later. I’m guessing you’ll try and reapply for 2021?
Yes, going to have another go assuming they don’t change their minds about the validity period of races. If my Chicago 2018 time is still valid I should have a decent time of getting in with going into M50 as well.
And it’s a week after the 70.3 in Texas, I’d have preferred 2 for a bit more travelling but as long as it goes ahead it will be alright.
BTW, if you do get into Boston don’t hang around with hotels, they went very quickly. I got an Airbnb who then dumped on me, and ended up with a hotel near the airport about 20 minutes on a tube line.
Also applying for Boston next year - I organised a Marriott hotel in the city centre the day that they were opened for bookings. If I don’t get a place it’s full refundable. I would strongly suggest booking something now just in case @stenard.
Felt confident that my 4:01 under BQ time would be plenty though I’m not confident now. But then again who knows what will happen in the next few months
Yeah, good point by both you and Jeff. I will look. I also have a friend who live in the city and they offered to let me stay when I last applied (and didnt get in). But they now have two kids and I’ve not spoken to them in quite a while, so should probably not bank on that!
OK - just looked. Ouch! I better get in touch with that friend!
I know what you mean!
Even looked at driving or getting a very early lift to the start on the morning of the race and then getting the train back on the day. 2.5 hours drive and probably 3 hours on the train!
Hmm, maybe I should have a look later and book something with free cancellation.
It got that expensive I reduced the amount of time I was going to be in Boston.
It was largely showing as a couple of grand for 4 nights or so earlier
Before September I’m going to have to just ask the friend I think. That kind of price is pretty prohibitive. My mum and her partner were keen to come, but I’m not sure that kind of pricing is going to be conducive to that
I got 3 nights in a Marriott for 105k points and $80 in taxes, good location by the looks of it at about 15 mins from the finish
Marriott has an offer now (at least in the US, but assume it’s global) for 2 more weeks for 60% point bonus when purchasing points. 4 nights would cost 140k points, which with the current bonus would cost you $1,100 - so much cheaper than the 2 grand you may have been quoted. But with Marriott they also offer a free night if you book for four nights on points, so you could get 5 nights for ~$1,200 total.
That said, although they’re more flexible than some cash bookings, you would be stuck with $1k worth of hotel points if you had to cancel.
I’ve just seen one hotel in Boston for 4 nights, £4k
I’ll be sleeping at the train station at this rate.
I saw a bloke out running in a Roth 2020 t-shirt yesterday. I assume it was “training-for” merchandise and he was just trying to get his money’s worth
Never heard of these events, but this is the same sort of scenario that would put many independent tri organisors out of business -
They were on sale as part of the pre race hype/merch package, I think they had entrants names on too…
I always think it is bad ju ju to buy the stuff before the race, but in hindsight maybe this would have been worth getting
Yes. Believe there was massive demand for the Wimbledon 2020 merch. Crazy really
Boston are putting on a virtual marathon which is $50, but you get various things like T-shirts, clif samples, medal…
It’s limited to 15K places, so about half the marathon field, and only to people that had a place.
I think they’ll sell a lot of them. Not sure I’ll do it, don’t think I fancy running a marathon like that.
But it would be a fairly unique T & medal.
