Momentous event cancellation and lack of refund

Going on London, Kona, Taupo etc. I don’t think I’ll be rushing to enter to many races in the first half of next year unless they have a solid refund policy.

London obviously realised they’ve got little chance of running it then.

Hopefully there’ll be a bit of normality by mid 21, assuming there’s some kind of treatment or semi-viable vaccine.

Not planning on doing the virtual VLM?

If you had GFA/champ time from before Jan 19 you need to requalify for 21. However you are allowed to do this at the virtual event. If you don’t then you still get a place…just not premium bogs (haha) and start position.

Nope. Not GFA. Miles off that. Thank goodness.

I just had a bog standard ballot entry. But from 2019 but I got injured. Hence why I couldn’t defer again and now I’m very relieved.

My old work colleague (the very fast one) qualified GFA in Oct 2018, got injured (sick actually with a long term issue), so deferred 2019 to 2020, then somehow missed the payment window because she was on holiday, then begged to be let in (which she was) and now London is 2021.

I wonder if she’ll get a start?

It will be interesting to see what Boston does, it’s always patriots day but I’m not sure they’ll be confident of that happening.

I have a feeling they might wait until autumn as well, which will be a bit of a pain for me. I’ve still got the 70.3 in April if that happens.

Going to be quite uncertain for a while yet.

It’ll basically be 3 straights and 3 corners - the long arc in front of Buckingham Palace, a right angle turn towards Horse Guards and then a right angle turn onto Birdcage Walk. There’s enough road width on all of it for the turns to not be too sharp.

I assume they’ll be going the same way as they would in the normal marathon, so the opposite direction to my usual lunchtime run. It would be quite cool to get the e-mail from Strava saying “Uh oh, Iliud Kipchoge just took your Local Legend status”

My mate who practically has the Clwydian Range as his back garden became the Local Legend of “Going Down” the other day :joy::rofl:

Apparently Epic are going ahead with their race in late September (20th), 70.3, standard & sprint on the same day.

PS: it’s at Windermere.

Yes, she should get a start, just not on GFA. To be honest, if you are in pen 1 of blue or red it doesn’t make much difference. She could also run the virtual event and get a new GFA/champ time for 2021…no idea how they will police that!

From what I’ve seen of this virtual race it’s wide open to abuse, I’m sure a lot of people will just get their (fast) mate to take their Garmin with them for a few quid.

If it’s just a run on Garmin/Strava then what’s to stop someone riding 42.2km on a bike at a suitable pace for it to look like a GFA run?

Hmm, I can see a bit of backtracking on that at some point.

Email for the virtual event arrived.
4th October, £20 to enter, 24 hours to complete it and you get a medal/t-shirt. They will have their own app (developed by TCS) which will record your time/distance.
Entries open until Monday 17th and then open to public on 26th for any spaces that are left (45k max).

York Marathon and Run For All cancelled yesterday with just transferring everyone over to next years event. Despite RFA banging on about being a charity, I cant say I have a lot of goodwill for them. Their events are expensive with pretty much zero goodwill to the entrants compared to most of the running landscape. How successful have people been with credit card charge backs and any experience specific to RFA?

Weymouth 70.3 is gone.
Did anyone take a punt in the end?

@chickenboy was prepped and firing for Weymouth. That’s a shame.

As i mentioned on the trail/ultra thread, Dartmoor NP have banned any mass participation events, and rumours are that Snowdonia NP have followed suit. So a few events there to fall ( my RD friend is feeling chuffed as he pulled his Dartmoor race quite early, and stuck to it [was due in Sept]).

it’s outside stakeholders in events that are making the decisions whether events will happen, even if the organiser can show that the event can run safely and under BTF Covid guidelines.

similar with Xbourne (Eastbourne Tri’s off road event planned for Sep). Everything in place with permits and landowners permissions and as it was mostly off-road (just a short stretch of tarmac) shouldn’t have been a problem. However, Forestry England on who’s land the bike and run sections would be held, are only permitting events for a max of 30 people, and although the local manager was all onboard with it he was over-ruled by HQ.

That’s a shame for them. I was looking at the duathlon later in the year. Any inside word on that?
