Unbelievable, to get my deferral put in I’ve had to pay $15 for a day licence that I won’t be using, and paid before. Robbing b@stards!
No great surprise, but RideLondon cancelled
Also not really as big a deal as it seems, given it wasn’t going to have been the same event anyway with Surrey having withdrawn their support/roads
Bit of credit to Ironman US, after signing up for the deferral to Texas 70.3 2021 last week I got an email earlier saying I could defer to 2022. They did say I could wait and see what happens but I said I just didn’t expect the borders to be opened.
So later in the year I’ll get a link to register for 2022, but no deferrals etc. from that, assuming it goes ahead!
Think that’s my 3rd race next year already
That’s pretty good. In all honesty I wish they’d say the same for Euro races as well, for international athletes.
I think them targeting putting on races solely for domestic athletes across the entire Euro portfolio would simply be more realistic than clinging to the hope of staging 2k+ sized events. It would also give those people who need to organise flights, car hire, etc the option of more certainty / less stress
Yes, Denmark 70.3 is the next one for me to worry about.
If things are looking dubious in May still they might change their response.
I know Texas did the same for a Canadian but not sure how it applies to US athletes.
Yep. I’m sitting on an IM Copenhagen place that I can’t use due to their unwillingness to be at all flexible, and so another deferral would suit me just fine!
I just had an email to say Nirvana have extended their portfolio to a number of US races, including the 70.3 WC’s. I’ve never used them before, as it’s generally easier just to do you’re own thing within Europe, but for a bigger trip to the States, I can see the attraction of buying an all in package deal given the Covid situation, and the ATOL/ABTA protection.
There’s the Package convenience; but you pay handsomely for it. Accommodation costs are hugely inflated, and if you are alone, there are supplements you would have if self organising. I never used them in the end.
If I want to book a package, I use Expedia; they cover everything and offer alternatives when it goes wrong. They re-booked my BMI flights for Hamburg when BMI went bust.
True, but it depends on the availability of accommodation in the area. Often, companies like Nirvana book out all the decent places in a nearby vicinity.
In Europe, you can often find places where you get free cancellation. That seems to be less prevalent in the US the few times I’ve been. And whilst historically it’s not something that I’ve attributed value to, with Nirvana you would be covered if the race got cancelled but flights etc were still going. With a “normal” package provider, they won’t give a shit if the whole purpose of your trip was dependent on a race. If the flight and hotel can still be provided, they’ll say “not our problem”.
There’s a premium for sure, but in these times, I can see that for anyone risking a race entry in the current climate, that premium might be worth it.
Well that’s the value judgement!
Checking my emails I now have 3 paid rescheduled events on the same fricken day.
I’m trying to avoid same and including 2022!
A couple of trail runs have been rearranged for later this year.
It must be a nightmare for you Ironigarchs right now!

Never been so thankful all I have in play is a £55 hill race.
My only one was a self sufficient play in the mountains if we’re ever allowed back into Wales! haha
…actually, tell a lie, I have Cardiff half rolling over to 2022. If i can be ar$ed with it.
Wales is turning into Bhutan.
I’ve just got Yorkshire 3 Peaks fell race which has so far been re-scheduled three times April → September → April → September
Although that’s working out quite well for me so far as original April I was recovering from illness, Sept I was injured, and still getting over that injury so probably wouldn’t have been fit enough for this April
I’m loosely hoping there might be an AL before then so I can get in.
Strange that I can get in UTMB but not that.
Or AM, BL
I got the same, I wonder how much it adds up to be, as you say it does remove a bit of risk, although a lot of them seem to be 70.3’s. I’ve seen that all the full distance IM’s have been filled for sometime but a few have a waiting list this year, presumably if overseas people can’t make it, maybe why they are accepting deferrals as there’s a good chance they can sell that space assuming it goes ahead.
Maryland might be a decent shout for Kona 22, same day as the 70.3 WC’s and it’s usually a fairly small field anyway I think.
Not sure what happens if you want to make a holiday of it, assuming they do an option without flights and just the period around the race.
Boston are doing a virtual 5K in April, $45US and you get a medal, and $20US for international shipping.
Wow, I don’t think I’d pay that for an official timed 5K.
