They’re not for everyone, that’s for sure. But yeah, he’ll be fine. Just a stressful time constantly flip flopping back and forth.
He can’t complain too much though, as he’s had the time to build a cool bouldering wall in his shed. So once lockdown is over, I can go down and play in there over a couple of beers!
Presumably IM will be reluctant to push any events back past the end of August because it’ll push them into the next year for KQ (assuming that Kona happens this year…)
Its too easy IMO, to look at races through the lense of ‘whether the current restrictions allow it or not’, and not through the eyes of a local, for whom IM is an interesting, or even annoying, distraction to their year… I strongly suspect that communities will push back hard and say ‘not this year’ in most cases.
There are very few races based in locations where the revenue from IM is such a big deal that politicians will push hard… even places where that is the case, like Lanza, have had grief from locals in the past due to the disruption it causes, and now those opposing voices have got real power behind their argument and it’ll be really easy to whip up local opposition.
Could they go ahead with a pro only Kona. Do IM even care enough about the pro race to put on a loss making show case to keep the brand alive while their real customers can’t race?
I’m guessing that the delta between a pro only race and a full event aren’t that big, so if they run it, it’ll be for everyone.
I might be taking too cynical a stance, but if I was one of the voices in Hawaii and more specifically Kona and Hawi that is strongly anti IM (and they do exist), this would be a really easy year to strengthen my position.
I was thinking about Kona myself a few days ago, with it being October there’s still plenty of time but people MIGHT be qualifying for it before then, and if it does get cancelled what then, next year would be very crowded.
I know a couple of lads that were due to go last year.
I’m not sure it will happen, although the US are doing well with their vaccine rollout and a small island like Hawaii could be done quickly, as you say it’s more the appetite from the locals to put the event on, and risk having people coming from all over potentially bringing new variants.
Will also be interesting to see if there’s any athletes from Aus or NZ given the problems getting back into their countries.
I had a friend do Estonia, said it was really well organised, better than normal as you had set times to do stuff and it had to be followed. IIRC he had to be out there 10 days before though so not easy logistically unless its a holiday also.
Wasn’t the “lawyers phone ringing” in reference to the spat with the IMUK franchise owners TriUk at the time? I seem to recall that TriUK husband/wife team didn’t take kindly to any criticism.
is that referring to the TriUK spat with one of the Pirates who TUK accused of libel or slander or summat over something that was posted on a forum? would have been around 05/06 time and I know who the pirate was but can’t recall the details now. the downside from TUK’s POV was that the pirate was a corporate lawyer…
