Twat
This might actually be useful for me for next Saturday
Pull Buoy and Tri Bike hardly in the same league for over-ratedness. Iād say a Tri Bike is appropriately rated, given the difference to a road bike on a flat course.
Salt is a funny one. Iām all for the science that says itās pointless and unrelated. Iām glad you discovered that aspect of human physiology 5 years ago and taught the world that.
Cramps are undeniably fatigue related.
But itās interesting there are so many advocates, people who absolutely swear by salt. Yes placebo ± marketing is powerful, but thereās not many products people will die on the hill for like they will for salt in preventing cramps, so who knows maybe there is a subset of people for whom thereās something there
Again maybe itās placebo. But for some people it clearly works like nothing else. Iād be interested in seeing those people go through a blinded trial
Might be wrong, but I thinks itās science Stenard who swears by salt?
Anytime!
I think there is something in electrolyte replacement helping slow down the onset of cramping, but no doubt linked to increased fatigue being caused by dehydration, rather than lack of salt being the primary issue
A lot of swimmers are sticking zeros in their water now, but you are dealing with āextremeā heat at times inside pools
Iāve got a few friends that are definitely in the pro salt camp, always got cramp at the end of marathons, starting as early as 18 miles I think.
They were reaching 70+ mile weeks as well. I was always sceptical as it didnāt affect me and I was generally running quite a bit less.
But they seemed to improve when using lots of salt or other minerals
Iāve always been pro magnesium for cramps but I get them mostly in my sleep rather than training or racing. I had a proper one once in RttKing and thatās not something I want to ever repeat!
I swear by salt (in drink not tablets) but not for cramps but because my post salt performances were so much better than before & it balances the level of sweetness for the sugary calories required.
Isnāt this how Andy Blow created his empire?
This says much the same:
No evidence salt / electrolytes work, except for the hundreds of use cases where they do work.
And back to overrated - Zone2 training.
Donāt you know anything, its all about zone 1 now
You might have the winner there.
Iāll take your salt and raise a pickle juice
Seems to help aborting them? Although for neurological reasons from the taste in the mouth rather than anything to do with salt absorption
they can beā¦but not all electrolyte imbalances are fatigue relatedā¦
Yes, I did (when I trained / raced!)
A bit like Doka, there was just a marked improvement in performance when I did and didnāt take high salt PH. Cramps, or a perceived reduction in them, was a sort of side benefit I did observe. But base hydration just didnāt cut it for me. I still find even when not really training, that if Iām a bit dehydrated and drink water, it just flushes straight through and Iām peeing constantly. Add some salt and it seems to be retained and replenish the dehydration more effectively.
Placebo or not, I had the same effect with salt as I did with Maurten. When very fit, and no change or other differences in other aspects, taking one or the other, or not taking one, was a massive difference just in training performance. And so I carried that into races.
You trained with Maurten ?
Obviously a southerner .
