Most Overrated Piece of Training Equipment

What do Northerners train with, liquidized ferrets?

So based on most of the above, the most overrated piece of training equipment is the internet?

and TT in particular…

Ha, no not all the time. But I did in the build up to my pb marathon for my long runs to test it out. And whenever I took some, there was a noticeable difference.

Knowing it worked (for me) after that, I reserved it to races for the obvious cost reasons!

At Ā£180 pa (or whatever their usurious sub is currently) I’d say the most overrated piece of training kit is TrainerRoad.

But it’s ā€œAI poweredā€ !

Hmm, interesting take. It’s the only subscription endurance related I still have. I no longer have training peaks, zwift, strava, etc.

It helps I’m on grandfathered pricing. Ā£7.50 or whatever it is for me a month is pretty decent. I love the interface, and I like the variety of sessions.

The AI powered TrainNow feature is what I pretty much exclusively use now that I’m no longer coached, or training for anything in particular. It pretty much gets it spot on, even more so since they feed in running and swimming activities.

Even when coached, I did all my training peaks set sessions in TR

I am not up to date on where Trainerroad is now, just see the odd press release. Always regarded it as a no-nonsense training tool, which is always going to have a more niche appeal than gamified Zwift.

I guess the only value over one of the free options is the training plans - if you know you want to do 5x6min @ftp then there are lots of free options to control your trainer to do that - or don’t, probably even better to free ride to hit targets rather than ERG everything.

Which is a long winded way of asking @stenard how does Trainerroad pick you a plan or a workout - especially if you are not currently training for an event? Do you tell it what you feel like doing, or what you would like to improve, and it looks at your data and picks something for you?

I’m the same, it’s the only subs I have.

You can train for an event, train for fitness or just take daily recommendations as Stenard does.

They aim to train to the athlete, so it takes in your parameters, analyses past training and past progress, and recommends a weekly structure which you can accept or change as you see fit.

The workouts then adapt based on what you actually do, and rest days or easy days will be recommended but not forced if you go beyond the planned work.

The main issue I saw on the forums is that people come in with preconceived ideas of how training works, and want it to work the way they think training works. So if you’ve never used it, the biggest thing to bring is an open mind …and I’d say about six weeks you’re open to taking the advice.

Yeah I’m a bit confused here because I thought it was TriDot that made the big AI claims?

I like the TrainerRoad product, don’t get me wrong. Even after the secretive acrimonious break-up/firing of Coach Chad. Thinking the product is worth $22 pcm (and billing only is USD) is where I think they’re a bit bonkers. And yes value is personal blah, but compare $22 pcm vs what other subs cost, not necessarily in the cycling space.

This could be said of any coach / athlete relationship, virtual or IRL.
