Nike Zoom Fly/Vaporfly 4 and NEXT% - The Thread

I only bought them for dog walking.

My Wildhorse 5 were garbage for running in, so got relegated to dog walking duties and have totally worn through the sole after a year and a half.

I’ve not tried the Juniper Trail shoes, but I love my Wildhorses, got 2 spare pairs in the garage.

Regular 90min weekend runs on the hills are fine, 52km fell run was fine & 1900mtrs of climb in a run the other day was fine.

It would appear they don’t suit everyone :joy:.

I think @jeffb ordered a pair recently, so there may be another opinion incoming.

Yes, not sure they’ll arrive before my NYD trail race though.

I really like the FlyEase. So much that I have a battered old pair by the door I can’t seem to get rid of, because they’re so easy to slip on for odd jobs.

I’m hovering over buying a new set of those too.

A bunch of online influencers are guiding me toward the terra kiger 7, looks like it has better heel grip too.

No one is saying any of them have good grip in the wet though. My trails are suburban - just local flat woods, they just get really muddy in patches this time of year.

Oh bloody hell went back on and they are no longer on sale. That’ll teach me, and also save me Ā£70…

A pair of Alpha’s and a pair of Tempo’s turned up at 8:30am and I was still in bed

Managed to jump out of bed and get to the door before the driver drove off :slightly_smiling_face:

Annoyingly the pair I bought have attempted to be delivered today too. I only ordered Christmas Day. Estimated arrival time was after we’d have left where we are through NY, so I ordered them to home. And then they’ve come super fast.

The Wildhorse did arrive, only tried them on for a test but seem fairly comfortable and the grip looks better than the Pegasus T2’s. Feel fairly light as well.

Might try them at the trail race on Saturday, going to be hard to call conditions though, if it was today it was almost certainly quite boggy, but if it does warm up as it’s forecast it could improve things quite a bit.

Okay, this may or may not be controversial: If the wündershoes are like +4% speed, which I think we all agree (to a lesser or greater extent) that they are, what is the difference between all the ā€œnon-wünderā€ shoes?

Is it all just how they feel, durability, or is there actually a measurable speed difference between the millions of Nike road shoe models out there?

It’s not 4% speed it’s 4% efficiency which means you can run the same speed for less effort, or faster for the same effort, but 4% more effort does not equate to 4% faster. Efficiency v. Speed is different for everyone and different at different speeds, hence 4% is an average.

Anyway, as for other non-super shoes. One of the arguments for allowing the shoes was that shoe companies always claim their new shoes are faster, more efficient, more energy return etc. It just seems they weren’t the leap forward these were. I heard some comment that other shoes never offered more than a 1% advantage. Although a lot of 1% over the years mean a 2015 shoe is substantially quicker than a 1975 shoe.

Sure, I just found myself browsing for a shoe for my harder runs, interval, tempo that sort of thing. Endlessly scrolling through and comparing Zoom Fly Pegasus Rival Infinity Miler Tempo, I’m sure there are more…then I thought - hang on. If any of these are significantly faster then they’d have the same uproar as the magic shoes. Ergo, they don’t.

Just get some zoomfly as they are the everyday training version of the Next%. Still have a plate but a different foam- react rather than zoomx

Agreed. These are my favourite training shoes at the moment. Well cushioned so get the leg saving benefit, just not as light as the super racers.

Meh - if they’re no faster then I’ll get the cheapest ones I like. The Miler has been very comfortable these last six months.

Also :flushed: remembered I bought so Reebok Floatride Energy 3.0 just for this reason ages ago. Got them out doing 800s on the track tonight and they were fine. Not fancy by any means, but maybe I’m okay at the cheap end of the market. 249g, Ā£40ish.

Anybody had issues with arch rub on the alphas?

Took mine out today for the first time for a 10k and was there was noticeable pain on the right foot towards the back of the arch. On inspection the stitches in the innersole end there and it it quite rough (final stitch), but not sure that would be enough to cause it. Didn’t actually cause a blister…but can’t imagine it getting any better after 20miles.

I found a few similar stories on Google and some people had luck swapping out the inner sole…but reluctant to do that as they are glued in.

Yes. I got an arch blister on my left foot. I’ve had that issue with Nikes before. I returned and went up half a size and been OK since then.

Thanks.

I already went up half a size from my normal Nike purchases  after my experience with the Next% causing a blister on my little toe. The toebox on the alphas seems very spacious by comparison!
