Nike Zoom Fly/Vaporfly 4 and NEXT% - The Thread

Do we think Nike are on the verge of bringing out a new version of the Next% Tempos or discontinued them completely? No version at all is available on the website? They were popular so surely seems unlikely, and I’d be supper gutted if they did!

I’m not against using other brands but as I’ve got about 4 pairs it’ll be a while before they need replacing as I only really use them in races.

On that point - Adidas seem to have totally changed their sizing - I’ve got a pair of 8.5 Adidas Bostons from 2017 which barely fit me, and just bought a new pair of Boston 12s in size 8 which are lovely and roomy - pretty much the same size as the Nike Pegasus I bought at the start of this year - super wide.

The Boston 12s are my first foray into shoes with the proper springy foam in - compared to the 2017/18 tempos and bostons I’ve been running in the past few years (finally got through all the trainers I bought cheap pre-covid when I was running more!) they’re incredible (and not even the top Adidas shoe).

Edit - hence the interest to see how much other’s had experimented across different brands.

I’ve tried version 2 of the Sauconys. Loved the Speed but mine were a tiny bit small, seemed a really flexible shoe that I could use for all types of runs and were pretty quick. Based on that got a pair of the Pro (right size) but hated them, they just felt stiff and for me didn’t seem fast at all, there wasn’t a single type of run where I wanted to use them. Gave them away.

Other than that I’ve tried the Adidas Prime X Strung (got given them in return for the Sauconys), I’m not overly taken with them.

Nike all the way for me, though have not gone for the latest versions (Alphafly 2 or Vaporfly 3).

I’ve got some ASICS Meta something and …

… they’re actually better :face_with_peeking_eye::joy:
But they have this weird “ribbed” texture inside the shoe, which definitely is not for his pleasure :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

The sports shoe industry has decided the best way to hold customers is to confuse them with such a stupidly large array of models and changing names that people get sick to the fucking back teeth trying to figure out what the fuck a shoe is designed for.

Consequently I learned to speak Nike, took me about six months, so there’s no ducking way I’m learning Asics gel fucking trabano knobshite just so I can buy a fucking shoe.

In short, they win.

Because bike companies haven’t been doing that for years? :man_shrugging: XC, Down Country, Enduro, Downhill etc.

Interesting to hear that. Like others I’ve been happy with Nike and not wanted to risk experimenting with other brands only to make an expensive mistake. I have tried a couple of pairs of Adidas Bostons when I’ve seen them in outlets in the past but they’ve always been way too narrow; may look again if I come across a cheap pair now.

Like @gingerbongo Nike just work for me, I’ve had zero issues with any of the various styles I’ve bought over the years. Wore Hoka, Adidas, NB previously but I know where I’m at with Nike!

Yeah it’s unbelievable how different they are these days!

Hats of to Nike getting there first and getting everyone on their ‘platform’!

Seems like the way in for other brands is to make the regular trainer (which is the ‘companion’ to the super expensive race-day shoe) available very cheap in flash sales from time to time, to tempt people over.

That is an interesting point as I used to live my old Adios Adizero somethings, back in about 2015 I think. But they were just too narrow. Still, it’s hard to warrant looking elsewhere and only end up running 50km before selling them on!

If it ain’t broke …

Pulled the trigger on a pair of Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 last night, Sportsshoes.com have them discounted to £115 (+ discount code on top & topcashback).

Also went for a pair of Nike ZoomX Dragonfly XC Cross Country Spikes from Nike directly, with one colourway reduced to £112. I’m sure they’ll provide no assistance in XC, but I’m willing to try anything as I’m useless at XC.

Sports Direct have the bright pink Dragonfly track spikes for £80 (50% off) available in all sizes above 7.

I’m pretty disappointed in the speed 3, they lost their “speed” pretty quick, the pro 3 is faster, and seems to last much longer, such that I’d probably spend the difference for longevity alone.

I picked up a pair of the Brooks Hyperion as an alternative to the Streakfly for speed work purposes. Pretty impressed so far as a non-carbon plated shoe

I loved the Speed 2 (although mine were a tiny bit small) and on that basis got the Pro 2 (in the right size) but really hated them. They felt a harder/harsher and didn’t seem faster for me.

In an ideal world I’d have got another pair of Speed 2s, but was struggling to find any at a reasonable cost.

I’d thought Vomero 16 were an old pair sitting around in a warehouse somewhere, and maybe they were, but they do appear to be the current Zoomx ‘daily trainer’ from Nike so maybe worth looking into. I haven’t got a strong opinion yet after two runs, kind of a flat first run but performed well at a stop/start hilly tempo effort last night. Felt a lot better, maybe does suit the target run I was after, tempo efforts for a heavy slower runner. I’d guess they perform even better with normal weight runners.

Price at sportsdirect does seem to be good too.

Going to run long in Miler 2 and fast in my Pegasus again before finalising my judgement

Huge fan. Had a pair for a couple of years, use sparingly. Actually think they are Brooks fastest shoes.

The current model has a more robust sole compared to the Nikes and is good in the wet.
