Nike Zoom Fly/Vaporfly 4 and NEXT% - The Thread

I got the pink ones, but only because they were the only colour available in my size. I actually prefer the green. I can’t really justify a second green pair using the cheap link Jeff posted…

Is anyone using elastic laces in these or does that impact the ‘benefit’ of the carbon plate and rebound?

I’ve used them in the 4% with no problems. tbc on the NEXT%. Will likely use with laces for my marathon, but then make a call with where I go for my IMs next year.

Working plan is that I’m going to continue using 4% for 5-10k’s, and 70.3’s, and will save the NEXT% for the full marathons (both standalone and IM) where the additional stability is likely a benefit over the longer duration events where form is likely to diminish a bit more.

@goldenboots what size are they?

Size 9. Just too tight in the toebox unfortunately.

Have also gone for the pink, as it was all that I could get on eBay for a tiny bit under the full retail value. No doubt they’ll be met with laughter from the Mrs when she sees me put them on for the first time

Some of that new Rapha Gore kit looks nice, went in the shop in Manchester on Monday to have a look, but probably more than I want to pay right now, I’ve got about 6 waterproof running\cycling jackets, some haven’t even been used.

Even the BBC are bigging them up now.

It mentions some people complaining about them, I suspect they are tied into shoe deals with other companies, as Next% are available to pretty much anyone I don’t have a problem with them, maybe the alphafly’s if it was a race and they controlled who could have them.

The Castelli ShakeDry is nice, but above £300. So that’s a no from me.

Most of the club have ShakeDry, so I feel I need to “one up” :see_no_evil::joy::face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Misleading headline there!
Neither Kipchoge or Kosgei said that :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

But I’ll buy them to trial.
30 day risk free.
Why the hell not?

Part of the problem with the old fancy swim suits was they clearly gave some people far more of an advantage than others depending on body shape.

Idro pro :ok_hand:t2:

Surely all the Shakedry Castelli, Rapha and Gore stuff is the same?

Gore wear c7 is 185. Much cheaper!

Yes. That Idro Pro looks the nuts.

I went to Evans Macclesfield (closing down on Saturday) where everything was 20% off.
They’d been cleaned out :face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Tesco did a club at voucher thing, where you got £3 Evans for each £1 of clubcard rewards, then you got Evans to match Wiggle/Tweeks, meaning you could have a ShakeDry for £62 clubcard vouchers.

But I don’t have any loyalty cards and would rather eat my slippers than be seen shopping in Tesco.

If you need to up the game, your only option might be the Assos Sturmprinz. I would love one of those bad boys, but it’s >£300.

I have an Endura SL260 Pro jacket and tbh I never use it because it’s like a £165 crisp packet i.e. no venting. (I paid half price!). Instead I use my Perfetto Light or a Sportful ‘UK Rain Jacket’ which has big vents & a decent tail. I like Endura stuff, but that top-end rain jacket is a lemon imho.

I think the opposition to the Nike shoes stems from the price. As mentioned, every new shoe claims to be faster than the last version, so it’s difficult to ban one of them just because it appears to be true. But because it cost twice the price of other top end shoes, and 3 or 4 times what a pair of decent racing flats cost, you have basically created a financial arms race at the front of the club athlete pack. Nothing new to triathletes who are used to the £/time equation on the bike, but running had avoided this kind of minimum entry requirement up to now.

No doubt when the other brands launch a shoe to match the performance, they will also match the price tag, and the baseline has shifted.

Would I be right in thinking a lot of people are now savvy to the diminishing returns on superbikes, and that position/set-up are bigger things. It doesn’t feel like an arms race any more. But there is a strong sense of FOMO surrounding the Nike shoes, even here.

Was that also one of the arguments with the swim skins, not only the initial purchase price but the extremely limited lifespan (in terms of their performance gain) maybe 2/3 uses.
I have no interest in these trainers but a few hundred kms would get a better lifespan than above if kept for racing.

I have a swimskin that’s about 6 years old; doesn’t get used much apart from pool Sprints, and the odd nws swim. The compressions is still there (only hand wash it), but I have had to treat it with Nikwax (TX Direct) several times to maintain it’s hydrophobic qualities.

Is this really being driven by their competiton, now that all serious amateurs are buying NIke and not adidas, Asics etc etc and the pros are probably having their heads turned?

The Idro Pro 2 is £340 and matches my existing kit!

But this is a Nike thread…I’ve ran in my old 4% for the past few days now - in cow pat and everything

Last mara training long run this weekend and plan to do about 9 easy miles and then run a local 10K race… My next% won’t arrive in time, so plan to run in the 4% but nervous about the toenail pain last week’s 20M run left me with. (Marathon is 2 weeks later.

Thoughts on simply making a small (1 inch max) cut across the big toe on each shoe? Think that would be enough to prevent potentially losing a toenail?
