Open water swim season starting

Did you see the footage where they couldnt get to one in the middle of an iceburg and so 4 of them swam at speed under it and smashed the iceburg.

Yeah.

Don’t go in, people.

It’s definitely a pursuit dominated by women of a certain age! All power to them as you say, I managed a swim in November last year, then I was away for a week and it rained, turned colder, and that was me out.

My 4th lake swim of the year this morning. Starting to acclimatise, but still swimming 200m head-up before being able to get my face in. It’s still 12C in the water, and no warmer when you get out so you cool down quick.

There is a standard distance tri at the lake in 3 weeks, and the 113 is only 5 weeks away. It’s going to have to warm up quick or there are going to be some cold cyclists at those events.

Yesterday should have been the first O/W coaching day of the season with the Para Tri development squad…but the water temp wasn’t budging above 12…

Sensible decision to abandon, shame but it’s a lot of travelling for 15 minutes swimming. Can’t believe how long it’s taking for the temperature to come up this year.
Been nice yesturday & today though so hopfully on the turn :crossed_fingers:.

Exactly…but we left it in the schedule being optimistic that we’d get a low 14 at least…

First OW session of the season, I was helping not swimming. Thermometer said 16 but consensus was that it was less than that. Nice night though.

Just unlucky timing for us.

yep…glorious here today…

Emailed the local outdoor swimming place as could actually make the session on Wednesday morning to ask what current temp was floating around.

“Between 7 and 10 degrees over the last week”.

Think I’ll give it another fortnight…

Off to my first session shortly.

They claim it’s 16 degrees. I’m calling bullsh1t on that before I get there.

Yesterdays sunshine has hopefully made it bearable tho.

It will be, in the 3ft deep edge of the lake, 1inch from surface

It was actually ok.
Went in with gloves and had to get out to get rid halfway.

Absolutely rammed down there…god knows how busy it’s going to get in summer.

First dip of '23 for me today :slightly_smiling_face:. Went through thunder & lightning to get to my swim spot, but loved, loved, loved it once in.

Fully aware I post this each year but it never fails to amuse me just how much like a penis that body of water looks .

Slow stats of swim

Great job :eggplant: Just read your strava description, I wonder if there’s any swim gains to be made from wearing old thick wetsuits? My new one feels amazing, no shoulder ache at all!

Is this the swimming equivalent of using wider tyres :joy:.

I’m never very quick in OW swims but this wetsuit is about 14yrs old, been patched dozens of times & probably the same thickness all over. I do have a snazzier one with skinny, lycra type arms which should ve quicker, but it’s far too nippy for that just now.
