Open water swim season starting

I was being a bit naughty.

Personally I’m all in favour of shouting at @mw22 :slightly_smiling_face:

Went in sea at Torquay, absolutely freezing so got out quite sharpish. Yes, I’m a wimp  I did get my head in though

First loch swim of the year done. Reminded me that I have absolutely no idea how to pace in open water as I can’t tell how fast I’m going

Lovely morning for it. Few small groups of swimmers sploshing about which was great. Obviously cut them out the photo for the gram.

Drove down and spent the day at St Micheal’s Mount. Got the boat back over and wife and kids headed to the bar for a drink or two. I slapped the wetsuit on and swam around the island - depending on the tide it’s a 2 - 3km swim, I went sort of mid low tide (clocked just under 2km).

It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years. Set off just after 6pm with the sun shining and pretty minimal wind. Went anti-clockwise as I prefer to breathe to the right so would have the island and castle in view. Had an absolute blast - felt like a proper mini adventure even if it was just for over 30 minutes - fantastic views to be had on the southern and western sides that you don’t get to see from land too

(Shocking picture with a much receded tide after)

Has anyone swam in Loch Ken ?

Considering a post Ultra Scotland recovery swim on the Monday morning after as it is just down the road from where I’m staying.

https://lochken.org.uk/activities/

Thinking of using the carpark at Boat O’Rhone.

I haven’t swam for a nearly a year!

First full distance* OW swim if the year for me, got round in 1:04 so pretty pleased with that, couple more of those will do me nicely.

  • 5 laps of the lake should be 3750m ( my watch had me at 3560 so who knows :man_shrugging:t2:

Cracker of a day though :ok_hand:t2:

Hi Doug

I haven’t, but it’s been recommended to me by many, so well worth the effort.

I swam in it as part of the Crossmichael Tri a few years ago. Grand swim, I think there’s a wee launching area at Crossmichael, so easily accessed.

Got out for my first proper ow swim today. Only 20 mins in the sea, but wanted to test the new wetsuit out and still have time to play with the kids in the mini surf.

Wettie is a tad bigger than the last one (which I bought 10 yrs ago), so it went on much easier! Much more suitable for a man approaching his 40s! :joy:

Suit was a good fit. Felt fine other than I’d say the shoulders were a tad more restrictive than my old huub, which is a fair bit thinner there. Hopefully I’ll just toughen up.

No idea on distance as my watch doesn’t do ow swim. Water temp was really lovely though. Enjoyed it.

A slow walk up away from the village starts the excitement:

Now feeling like a kid in a sweetshop:

and so peaceful:

What a lovely 1/2 hour swim and have to say, it was quite nice and warm…at 450m above sea level it’s usually pretty tepid.
Forgot my goggles d’oh, but didn’t seem to matter that much as no bally chlorine to avoid.
Loved it.

Hi Team

Just wondered what lube people use for wetsuits?

I used to use Johnsons Baby Oil Gel but that seems no longer available.

I do have some Huub wetsuit lube, but that seems to be ridiculously expensive.

I know that vaseline does affect wetsuits but maybe that’s decades after use?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Think I told this story before, but on the evening before a race a year or so back I was doing a kit check and noticed I was out of aquagel to use under the wetsuit. My Blue Seventy Helix SMT is a very snug fit & a good dollop of lube definitely helps when extracting the legs.

It was getting late but Boots in town was still open. But it’s a very small branch, and the only lubricant they had was “Boots intimate lubricant for added pleasure” in a small, vivid pink tube.

Well, I bought it obviously, and splodged the whole lot on the arms and legs the next morning.

And to be fair I did enjoy the swim quite a lot, but whether that’s down to the choice of lube I cannot say.

I don’t often use any. But when i do, i just go with Vas. I think @Jorgan is with me on this one as well regarding the vaseline myth.
