Post your school report 2020

I’ll have a go.

Running, C+

Jeff managed to carry over some 2019 form despite limited training time in the early months of the year, including some fell running. Any actual training evaporated along with races and running became a gradual plod in a bid for freedom.

This then picked up in late summer with some fell running until injury struck and instead of resting decided to keep running up and down mountains. This has then led to him writing off all running activity for some time and descending to walking to avoid his increasing waistline. This is not the first time he has done this and continually fails to learn from past experience.

Navigational skills continue to be an issue, and has the ability to still get lost despite having the route on his watch and telling him which direction to continue travelling.

This accumulated nearly 1800km or distance & 27,000m of ascent during the year.

Did manage to improve photography skills to raise his mark.

Cycling, A-

Despite a poor start to the year and spending lots of time daydreaming about new bikes, Jeff then discovered he had a Wattbike in his garage and an unused Zwift subscription taking money from his bank account.

Despite technological difficulties and poor racing skills, including (but not limited to) not actually realising where courses started and finished he has shown reasonable commitment and managed to improve his cycling over the season on shorter events.

Sadly, this training generally did not translate to real outdoors cycling due to his aversion to cold and wet. This inability to MTFU is a black mark on his record this year.

Swimming, B-

2020 has been a frustrating year for Jeff while swimming. After showing some rare motivation in the early months of the year, fuelled by the fear of being eaten by a Great White Shark off the Galveston coast he soon lost interest again when the pool closed.

He then found further motivation later in the year and began to move in the right direction in late summer, including some open water swimming.

Sadly, his race performances fail to match his pool training once he dons his gimpsuit, and anything other than warm water causes problems for him.

He has since slipped back into his bad ways and merely thinks that watching people swimming at the pool will be sufficient training. Also must try harder to swim outdoors.

Triathlon, U

Despite several near misses no triathlons were actually completed this year. One race was started but his inability to deal with the cold, despite being a northerner has cost him once again.

Must learn to man up or enter warm races.

DIY, home skills

Shows absolutely no interest in this, much to the anger of fellow humans. Limits efforts to bare minimum and would be a disappointment to father.

This lack of interest is also extending to bike maintenance where he makes simple mistakes like using old kit and failing simple tasks like routing a chain correctly.

IT skills are also very limited.

Drinking, E

Jeffrey showed some early promise this year with at least one 2am lads bender and duck pond photo, and subsequently losing 36 hours of his life. And other nights at the local nitespots.

However, since March has essentially gone tea total and is now wary of being breathalysed after eating wine gums.

Tritalk, A

Has shown an unhealthy interest in this bromance web forum spending countless hours talking bollocks with similar like minded people. Really needs to meet more real human beings but has physical proof that some of them are real humans and not Russian AI bots.

Cobbie’s DIY skills have significantly improved since receiving a first edition ‘How to build your first patio’ by F & R West.

Ouch!

Running, C
Andy managed to struggle around a half marathon in March just before lockdown and even managed some semblance of ongoing training until lower leg injuries brought matters to a halt. Tentative reintegration has commenced with short and slow efforts every other day continuing.

Cycling, D
Despite having an old-school turbo trainer at his disposal, Andy hasn’t seen fit to bring that piece of kit into use this year. Instead, cycling has been limited to relatively short commutes from a free car parking spot in a dodgy area of North West London just inside the North Circular to his desk and occasionally onwards from there with the use of the Boris Bike network. Whether this will continue once proper winter weather arrives remains to be seen.

Swimming, E
Andy has spent the year teaching the younger students in his family how to prat about in pools rather than any real swimming at all. Andy probably hasn’t swim a full length of a pool all year.

Triathlon, U
Andy has not been near a triathlon all year, nor has his finger been anywhere close to hovering above an entry button on a 2020 race website.

DIY, C
Spent more time buying tools and materials than actually doing much DIY. Some effort put into the garden, but most of Andy’s year was spent admiring his better half’s superior DIY skills and energy levels.

Lol … didn’t something like that happen in one of the soap operas too?

Brookside?

Got to say I’ve never watched one in my life though!

Swim B+
Chris has performed steadily this year and most of his assignments were handed in on time, although at times he does just enough. His best work was in the middle term when the school pool closed and he swam in the sea 3 times a week.

Running A-
Chris is a diligent pupil but lacking genuine talent. He ran across Tennessee, at his own pace but still struggled to break 20 minutes for 5k.

Cycling B-
Chris has good cycling ability but has only applied himself in short patches this year. He needs to work on that VO2 Max, and in Xwift races perhaps try the odd sprint at the end. I will be looking for more effort in the coming 12 months.

Running – C
A committed, even textbook, start to the year from Peter as he clearly committed to his Autumn goal of a sub 75 half at Cardiff. As with many things, the pandemic then reared its head which had a major impact on his motivation. A couple of token virtual races and that was it, Peter handed in a letter to drop Running as one of his subjects, to take effect immediately. The letter was rejected, but he was given some time off to reflect and re-energise.
This year will be Peter’s 2nd lowest mileage year since records began in 2013 – targeting a 1,300km total – with no races to speak of. Despite re-joining the class in all but name, actual attendance has barely scraped once a week. Peter has, however, developed a very arrogant streak in class particularly when it came to unannounced class tests: running a 65km 8 trig run, a 2VK, a 3VK and a relatively quick road half off no training at all. Very clever Mr Fletcher. This has not impressed anyone but himself, and only goes to prove the point that with proper dedication and execution, there are many races and PBs waiting for him in the future across all distances and terrains.
Hopefully a few targets and races in 2021 will bring him back on track to be the runner we all know he can be.

Cycling – B+
What can I say. Peter has actually ridden a bike this year! Peter has blown all previous mileage records, and performances, out of the water despite no signs of any races on the horizon. All of this and he only starting in April, with a target set of 4,000km (including virtual kms) for the year. Previous best when training for IM Wales was 2,387kms.
He has found his enjoyment in riding a bike again, so much so that he has invested in new equipment (his now beloved Canyon Endurace) as well as supporting electronic platforms (Zwift). Towards the end of the term Peter appeared to show an increased interest in using Zwift to race, which is having positive effects on his output metrics, just missing out on the 4 w/kg mark for 20 mins in a race/test.
Just missed out on an ‘A’ as we all know he’s a competitive animal, and won’t be happy lagging so far behind his peers, despite this being the first real year of cycling. I know he’ll be working hard to translate this year’s good start into a stronger 2021, as long as he can keep the balance with a return to running. Therein lies the challenge.

Swimming – U
One swim all year as part of an impromptu ‘VK’ tri in rough, choppy seas. Despite feeling like he was going to drown half way through the swim, in typical Peter style, he gritted his teeth, showed no fear and just got it done. As with the running, this does not help in demonstrating the fact that he needs to put in the hard work and can’t rely on ‘winging it’ forever. Peter also bought an SUP to avoid actually having to swim anywhere, but still getting to enjoy the sea.

Triathlon – C
Peter completed his first tri since 2015, though due to the pandemic it was a homemade affair. A 1km swim, 1km elevation bike (hill reps) 1km elevation (hill reps) run. Peter has however expressed a desire to return to tri in the coming year.
He will have to get back in the water if he wants to do well though. Simply writing off the swim and judging his performance on the bike/run aspect will be completely be missing the point.

DIY/homesteading – A-
Whilst Peter recognises his limitations in ‘hard’ DIY skills, and has thus learned to appoint experts in the field, he has reached top marks in the outdoors element. Major changes to his approach to gardening, where he has shown an aptitude and huge amount of enthusiasm and genuine joy.
Highlights have included acquiring and building a successful allotment plot, with a plethora of fruit and vegetables and completely remodelling the front garden – hard landscaping outsourced – including a planting design from scratch with all plants procured and grown by Peter himself, with further plans to adapt and improve next year.
Many plans are under foot for next year and we look forward to seeing them.
‘-‘ for having a leaky gutter that has been dripping copiously in the rainstorms keeping the family awake at night for months and months. Neither Peter or his partner have done anything to address the problem other than complaining. The same goes to say for the two major damp patches in the top of the house. They have persistently spoken about getting a roofer to look at it, but neither have done anything about it.

Drinking – B
Peter has taken up his new hobby of wine drinking with fervour this year, sprinkled with a little ale over the Xmas period.
One big session with his friends at the end of the summer however left him incapacitated for almost three days. A little pathetic really.

Tritalk – A+
Peter has really stepped up his Tritalk game this year, not only spending huge amounts of time on the platform, but much more regularly getting involved in discussions, both from a technical and non-technical nature.
Peter has even admitted to me that there are a number of TTers that he would happily meet up with for a pint … if it wasn’t illegal. And even without there being a race to force the engagement. He has neglected to state who these TTers are though.

Running Cycling Swimming - F

FB seems to have had a total loss of mojo and has done so little of either exercise that there is some concern that he won’t bother in the future.

Dog Walking - A+++

The introduction of His Muttliness seems to have invigorated FB into getting off his arse and doing some regular walking to make up for his failings above. It seems to be paying some dividends in weight control.

Rowing - A

FB seems to have refound a passion for using the C2 and is on a structured plan to row a marathon for charidee in 2021. There seems to be some complaint of him having a “sore arse” but the boy just needs to tough it out.

Drinking - A++++++++++

Yet another year of consistency and excellence both in terms of range of drinks and volume. Lockdown has meant FB has spread his wings and discovered some excellent new brews. I do worry that he also seems to have rediscovered Mezcal.

Weight Gain - A

Another steady year of being a fat bastard. Consistency seems to be the aim here.

Triathlon - B

Having qualified as a World Triathlon Level 2 TO in 2019, 2020 has proven a difficult year to actually uise this in an international context with events disappearing off the calendar. A successful World Winter Triathlon Champs in Italy in February was the only real event on the international calendar for him.

September saw FB getting some UK TO action including Chief TO at that September triathlon madfest at Hever Castle. A good job done.

DIY - A

Some important jobs around the house done. Particular credit for the new cupboard doors on the stairway which was a taxing job due to the weird dimensions and odd angles in the old property.

More of his DIY work is expected in 2021

Tritalk - A

FB has been a regular attendee at this school. An excellent attendance record to date - keep it up!

Swimming - C

Adam started the year well enough, looking to improve on the gains he made in 2019. An unprecedented three swims a week were completed from January until the pools closed in late March. Once the local lake opened in June it was clear much work was needed. Adam however seemed content on just one swim a week. This continued until he returned to the local open air pool but found himself increasingly frustrated with the sheer numbers in the pool and lane, compromising the quality of swim each time. Adam finally returned to the empty bliss of the gym pool only for it to be closed at the end of the week under tier 4 restrictions. Hopefully once local restrictions are lifted at least two swims a week will recommence.

A disappointing annual distance of 94,226 metres

Cycling - B

Cycling remains Adam’s strongest discipline and 2020 has been no different. Daily commuting and weekly intervals with club training rides were replaced with daily turbo rides, this was a continuing theme for the rest of the year. His consistency brought good power gains as the year went on and unlike 2019 seems to have retained this moving into 2021. A couple of solo century rides in the summer were highlights but genuinely missed the 7am Sunday smash fests he’s grown to love. Also needs to stop sandbagging in the comfort of B category Zwift racing. Remains to be seen if he will complete the planned solo Christmas Eve century and attempt to complete the Rapha festive 500 completely indoors.

Annual distance should be over 12,000 kms. Currently 11,634.5 kms

Running - B+

Adam ran consistently in the early part of the year and actually posted a 5km pb in a stormy Bushy Park Parkrun. Mileage was planned to be increased and intervals introduced in preparation for a 70.3 then full distance triathlon later in the year. Local restrictions didn’t stop Adam and he continued running every other day but always at an easy pace and always pretty short. As restrictions where reintroduced in November Adam posted his longest run streak and ran for 36 days straight. This surprisingly boosted his confidence enough to think that entering a marathon with less than 24 hours to the start was a good idea. In a strong show of determination he actually ran personal bests at both half and full marathon distances. Questions of his true running potential are now being asked.

Annual distance should be over 1600kms. Currently 1536.3 kms

Triathlons - B

Adam completed two races this year, both not originally on his radar. After reading that several TTers had entered Helvellyn and hearing good things about the race, he boldly entered. How hard could it be, he naively thought?- turns out quite hard. A token effort to search for local hills to run was made but nothing could prepare him for the task that presented itself. Despite the inclement weather Adam had a good showing and thoroughly enjoyed the day, just squeaking inside his arbitrary 4:30 target by 9 seconds. Not bad for a southerner. Adam’s second race of the year the Cotswold 113 was slightly spoilt by self sabotage where he left a vital piece of his bicycle on his car roof, and promptly drove off completely unaware. Mild panic set in the next morning once the error had been identified. He then spent the next 6 hours driving to Surrey and Bristol replacing bikes. The swim went very well for his average standard and for the first time he found a reliable pair of feet and managed to stick with them. The bike - although compromised - still yielded a respectable time. The run was very average but the day was not lost and he still managed an 8th place finish in his age category.
Hopefully Adam can continue with his consistent work and can continue to climb the age group rankings.

Transitions - C

Adam still struggles to remove his wetsuit without causing all sorts of muscle cramps in his hamstrings. His bike to run transitions however are respectable.

DIY - D

Adam has largely avoided any real work within his house and his efforts have largely taken place in the garden. There is a large room for improvement but should be commended for removing a fairly large tree in 30 degree heat when he really wanted to be out riding his bike

Boozing - A

Adam has had a successful term striking a fine balance of enjoying a few beers in an evening without compromising his exercise plans or childcare responsibilities for the following day. Red wine and port are known weaknesses and should be avoided without supervision.

TriTalking - A

Adam has spent countless hours on TriTalk in 2020. Has regularly spouted bollocks and has met an increasing number of other members in real life. He hopes this will continue in 2021

Love this thread

We’ll have to name and shame at least the whole cast with the Devotee badge. If they can waste 365 days in a year reading TT, then they can attempt to write a mildly humorous, self deprecating round-up!

DIY

During the first lockdown Chris turned over a new leaf and decorated the kitchen. Despite being duly recognised in his end of term report he has coasted through the remaining terms and produced no further worthwhile work.

He must learn to apply himself consistently otherwise he will not be considered for the school geography trip to Hawaii next October half term.
