Times aside, I’m impressed that LCB is putting herself into races which are out of her comfort zone & performing well.
Not that she probably cares but she’s earning a new found respect from me.

This is key. Look at her doing the Super League as well. To improve you must put yourself outside your comfort zone and not be afraid to “FAIL” which is the way to win at Kona for her. If you are not prepared to risk it all against Ryf you will never come higher than 2nd.
yeah i was thinking about this ther other day. How has Ryf been getting on? She seems, at least to me and the channels that i see, pretty low key. Think i saw that she was racing this coming week somewhere in the US maybe. But that could’ve been a 70.3.
One thing Sutto does well is keeps his athletes grounded, below the radar and focussing on the things that matter, winning the big money events.
Did the Russians recruit you?
I think I was probably at the wrong college for that sort of thing - my collegue had a bit of a reputation for having fellows who were very much to the right and produced the likes of Michael Portillo and Michael Howard.
I definitely hit my academic peak just getting in (despite my head of 6th form telling me I was wasting my time applying). From being at the top of the class in most subjects in my very average comprehensive, I was definitely “back of pack” academically and working hard just to stay afloat. There are some seriously clever folks there. Some made it look effortless and got stellar results without seemingly trying that hard.
It was still an amazing experience all round. I went to a very small college, with only about 220 undergraduates, but my 3 years there overlapped with people who would go on to be a cabinet minister, an Olympic gold medallist, an England cricketer, a BAFTA-winning film producer and comedian/actor who is on TV every week. Those are just the people with a high enough public profile to notice. I’m such an underachiever
We consider you a ledge.
I work with a guy that went to Eton, he’s also a Spurs supporter so I often make fun at his expense of where he (and his club) ended up
Etonians are a whole different level of unworldly elite!
Did any of them get an A* GCSE in 2nd language Welsh at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi without even trying though??!!
…but not absolute
Picked this up from ST. Lucy is in for the 1500m UK olympic trials. She’s got a mid 16 to her name back in time.
Results - 2nd but outside UK olympic qualifying time
It was interesting watching her versus pure swimmers. She normally looks one of the most graceful out of triathletes, yet the choppiness you refer to was very evident in this context.
I was also amazed at their breathing patterns. LCB was largely breathing a 442 from what I could see. Breathing of a 4 seems unhelpful, especially in an aerobic endurance event?! Surely you want to stave off the oxygen debt as long as possible??
Yeah, but you’ve done an Ironman.
I thought the front three all had different styles. LCB with the shorter, rapid catch, the winner with classic style stronger kick, third was the more glide, light kick.
Ive not heard it called 442, but I think I do that some times. Breathe every stroke but keep your head down for one in four to keep the power/speed up. Feels good, no idea if it makes any difference.
The commentator said that she hadn’t swum a 1500 in years, she just rocked up to have a crack at it
I kind of just made it up!
LCB was breathing off 4 almost all the time, with the occasional 2. I get the reverse, especially if you only like breathing one way, but off 4 would have me hypoxic. Even for them, they’re surely still working hard?!
In the pool, on fast reps I’ll swim off 2, but my “swim fit” tempo would be off 3. In OW, I’ve tried off 2 and my sighting goes to shit. Whereas bilaterally, I can sight every 6 or 12, and be straight as an arrow
I haven’t done any swimming in years, but for longer stuff I always breathed 4242. I tend to find that for a longer piece breathing every 2 feels like I’m hyperventilating and not so relaxed.
I’m the same but wonder if there’s also an element of evening up any imbalance in your stroke caused by breathing as well as the sighting.
