That cobbled stage was brilliant, some interesting stuff happened on hilly stages although yes the results are somewhat predictable.
We’ve now got the excitement of 3 back-to-back mountain top finishes. Which of them do the GC guys go hard on, or all three? Surely even pog can’t do all three days hard and his domestiques definitely can’t. A lot will happen.
He’s spent a lot of time hanging off the medical car and Jungels gave AG2R their win on Sunday, so there doesn’t seem to be much point in him soldiering on
Defo no Belgian team will take him then! Likely not too many other Euro teams either I shouldn’t think; Merckx is a Demigod. Cav has been a phenomenal bunch sprinter, but cannot hold even a birthday cake candle to EM.
Merckx and Cav are completely different types of rider. Merckx won everything, but Cav has been funneled into the bunch sprinter role because that’s what he does best so that’s what his teams have wanted him to do. I’m sure he could have won from breakaways if he’d had the opportunity.
It’s worth noting that many of Merckx’s wins came in the days of split stages, so he could win twice in the same day.
Cav had those lean years with his physical and mental issues, but the longevity of his career is remarkable.
I was going to make another swap this morning as I dont have enough climbers but I only have a couple left and I thought exactly this. With 2 weeks to go it better to carry a poor rider than end up with someone out. Time will tell if that’s the right decision
