Pro race chat (Tri)

Just been listening to the most recent episode of Chasing the Burn podcast and they’re talking about Olympic selection. The timeline was….

25th May - Cagliari race

30th May - Selectors meeting (only sat for two hours)

2nd June - sprint race in Poland (Dickinson, Brownlee, Milner)

4th June - selectors meeting

5th June - informed athletes

“Multiple media sources were informed before the athletes.” I guess embargoed press releases that were then later withdrawn?

I think we all expected an announcement around 10th June. I then saw an article on tri247 that said they were expecting an announcement on 14th June.

And we still wait…

I assume one or more athletes are appealing?

Getting a bit ridiculous now

Lawyer’s phones must be ringing all over the place

The Olympics will be over at this rate!

It’s probably not helping with training plans and races either, although I’m guessing the guaranteed people like Yee will be alright.

I’m not saying Jorgensen is daft as a brush but.

Maybe thick as two short planks.

Great athlete though obvs.

If she wins the WTCS next year I will have to eat my post, fair enough, but I’m not exactly concerned that will ever happen.

Okay I feel bad I posted that. But come on, this is an insane career decision.

Does racing T100 exclude you from WTCS anyway? Why not take the money and run?

If the other places are discretionary, what is the legal argument? The way it’s taking so long may suggest an appeal was successful, and has been counter appealed? But still don’t understand on what grounds someone can appeal in the first place.

Yeah it seems strange. There is an appeals process (near the end of this doc https://www.britishtriathlon.org/britain/documents/gb-teams/selection-policies/2023-selection-policies/olympic/olympic-policy-02.02.2023/paris-2024-olympic-games---final.pdf) but I’d assume it’s pretty hard to appeal a decision when you didn’t meet the auto qualification criteria.

Are we assuming appeals because of the delay in announcements or some indication that’s the case?

I’m kind of assuming - hoping maybe - that it gets announced before the WTPS event in Swansea this weekend. There’ll be a lot of BTF staff in attendance who could be fielding some questions if not.

I just can’t see Jorgensen doing any good at T100, she doesn’t have the bike strength for it and would surely come into T2 way down

I guess it was Coldwell who was appealing then. Does seem harsh.

And/or Brownlee :person_shrugging:

I literally just came here to post the same link. At least we know what’s going on now.

I wonder what JB will do now. He never took to longer distances - is Super League (which appears to be fading away as a concept) enough to keep him in the sport?

Feels like the end of an era, the way they are funded probably means it’s better to look to the future?

I think JB could try the T100 or 70.3’s and would be competitive but not against the new athletes coming through.

Maybe spend more time with their organisation?

Write a book.

I think it was Cascais 70.3 JB was doing alright and then the lights went out on the run. Turns out he barely drank anything or took in calories on the bike. Maybe a simple change will have doing better?

Maybe he should drop out of tri, challenge for the men’s 5k championship for eight years then come back to short course tri and go for the 2032 Olympic qualification?

Or maybe not, Gwen.

I need to let this lie, I know.
