Pro race chat (Tri)

Is he realistically going to recover and be able to race in 3 weeks? :man_shrugging:

I think that’s a bit harsh. It’s not exactly an unreasonable tactic for a pro to enter a tune up race. Was he supposed to lock himself up?!

By all accounts he got it travelling to SA / in the build up. That could just as easily happen to anyone else with St George

I do agree but there were quite a few insta posts of him drinking etc after South Africa.

I’m not saying that’s right or wrong but if you’re looking to peak for St George I wouldn’t have been doing it

Yeah, I do get that part. Not the cleverest. But he almost certainly got it before, as he’s now said that would explain why his run was so poor. So the actual fact of the matter is he likely got it when in “Pro mode”. Whatever that means for him!

They’ve been out partying quite a lot before Oceanside too, from the sounds of it. He likes a booze up after party too, historically.

You’re right in that you don’t know where they caught it, but I don’t get the impression he has lifted even a finger towards avoiding infection.

I suspect he’ll be essentially damage free, but in a month or two suspect covid had more of an impact than originally thought.

He wants to win the IM WC so yes. Do everything possible until that race is over.

But what if a tune up race is considered to be the key to success? If he’s established that a race 4 weeks out results in an uptick in performance a month later? I’m not debating the after party drinking, that’s stupid, but as he seemingly caught it beforehand that part is kind of an irrelevant point.

Every element of building to a race has an element of risk. He got hit by a car not long ago…should he solely ride zwift?

I’m mainly just taking issue with the fact that the simple act of racing was somehow irresponsible.

I didn’t mention him not racing. I’ll be clear, it’s the partying, mixing with AGers, being lax. If we take IMO the worlds most professional sport, F1 they are all still wearing masks and taking precautions. Too much money and prestige at stake. Even the Premier League seem to be on top of it now.
He put it out there that he can win the WC. I think on that course he could. It’s now part of the job keep healthy.
Of course he may have been unlucky too.

Frodeno has just said on his Insta that it is due to a small tear in his achilles

Just had a look at ticket availability for the London event next weekend. £99 hospitality seating or £12 restricted viewing seating. £12 sounds good.

Then I though, hang on, even with unrestricted viewing most of the time I’d be watching people on stationary bikes and treadmills…is it even worth seeing in person?

It strikes me as made for television, close ups of their pain faces on the bike/run, on screen graphics showing speed/pace, relative positions etc. I’m sure there’d be some kind of big screen at the event but, other then when they transition (no not that thread!), there wouldn’t be any difference between first and last place visually

I can’t remember who it was, but one of the GB track riders wrote in their autobiography about the steps that they were told to take to avoid picking up bugs. A lot of it doesn’t sound so odd now in the post-covid world, but it was things like not shaking hands with people, not pushing lift buttons with their fingers and pulling door handles with their bare hands.

They were obviously working on the basis that their whole 4 year cycle was designed to build to a performance peak at the Olympics, so they went to extreme lengths to ensure that they didn’t get sick at key times.

I remember an interview that said as much. Also taking phones out of covers and cleaning.

Yeah I remember Chris Hoy saying that when he was flag bearer at London 2012 opening ceremony everyone wanted to shake his hand, then he was using bucket loads of hand sanitizer

On a similar note.many of the world tour teams had a lot less ilness during races during covid. Frw roadside spectators, masks, hand washing and sanitiser, etc seen as why.
