The house painting would have definitely influenced your muscles, as would have holding on to the ladder for dear life!!
On days where my muscles are tired, I try and do sets like 5x2 with a min rest in between.

BW + 7.5kg for pullup
BW + 10kgs for chinup
Have been doing weighted of each on 5x5 program for past 10 or so weeks. Certainly helps being 70kgs.
What’s the difference between a pull up and chin up? As far as the military is concerned, they are the same. Overhand obviously.
In gym world chin ups are palms facing, pull ups palms away.
Chin ups are easier because most people have weak lats and the biceps make up for it.
