Pull up challenge

So a gym chin up is basically a glorified bicep curl . Not going to scale a wall with one of those.

But surely a wall you’ll run and climb up, no pull up required, a pull up is only useful when there’s a bar, and you’re going through with a muscle up?

On the pull up challenge, are you allowed to kip btw, I might be able to do a couple in that case?

Pull up’s more useful as proxy for general fitness though, as @GRamsay suggests.

I used to watch kids in a parkour class do pull ups, you could see how much they subconciously kipped a bit regardless doing a pull up, bet lots of people are too - not the full on get started swinging, but I bet you throw your legs forward a bit.

In the forces, you have to do it on the command of the PTI as well (“up/down”); so that really takes the ‘fun’ out of it.

High wall typically involved either jumping up to get fingers on edge and then pulling up, or an assist to get fingers on top of the wall and then requiring most of a pull-up action to get your elbows on and scramble over. Didn’t do your belt-buckle any good and usually needed a respray before next day. Easier as a team as the first guy up would remain on top to haul up the next guy and then catch and haul everyone else over, but as an individual effort it is hard work. Commando rope regain was a b*gger too, usually with a wet and muddy pool of doom beneath and a nice knobbly weapon on your back to avoid landing on…

But why do you a pull up from the cat position, you’ve got your feet on the wall to kick you up to at least straight arms - ie a wall run technique from the parkour/obstacle course racers, it’s obviously way easier than a pull up - even I can do it - 'cos you’ve got so much advantage in your legs, even from a hanging cat without any momentum from the run. Should protect the belt buckle too!

Except the boots have virtually zero grip on a smooth slimy wall.

coz they tend not to be wearing belt kit and rifle, worse still sometimes a bergan, plus the soldier has to stay flat at the top…

Just made your 58 pattern belt look more ally  I remember finding something akin to a 9ft wall in the local NT woods and doing it regularly on my runs before I joined-up.

In 2015 I became obsessed with pull ups.
Bit bored with tri ( done think I raced multi sport that year at all ?!) hyrox has not been invented yet so…
I literally did thousands over 12 months, the big target was 21 wide arm over grasp pull ups.

I did 19 five times but never quite managed it, up until this year I suffered constantly with back issues, 2010 I had a walking stick for 5 months due to sciatica.
Post 2015 I have honestly never had one back issue.

I’d be no we’re near 19 now but I am slightly lighter, and nearly a decade older, such a good exercise.

Honestly assumed @JibberJim was suggesting a little nap between each pull up

Didn’t bat an eyelid, sounds like the only way I’d get anywhere near 10

5 for me today and then 3x2.
Had a really hard climbing session yesterday evening, whole body was aching this morning. Went for a slow chatty 10km trail run, felt a bit better and thought I’d better give some pull-ups a try - something is better than nothing right?

4 again today

The spirit was willing to do #5, but the arms (?biceps) just weren’t having any of it

maybe it’s because I swam all through my teens, but I’ve never failed to do 10 whenever I want. Currently doing 3 x 8 at the gym, split with my 16-yo daughter who’s on 3 x 3.
