There was another one about a guy asking about his chances of qualifying for Kona. He had very little tri experience but has some smoking run times IIRC. He got called out and turns out he was an ex olympian also. (English I think)

Hmm, re-reading maybe that’s all it is.
“Pretty cool how he did their swim test, smashed the record and did a time I could not swimming all out, and he is almost 40!!!”
That’s what tickled me given he goes on to say how he felt 8 minutes for 450m is a very tough target for elite military forces, and he could do 7:30 at best
But I missed that the swim is sidestroke not freestyle, whatever that is. Doesn’t look fast on you tube 
Clearly I went in with bias that the previous swim threads I’ve read have been the Gary hall one, and the one where they felt Phelps/other Olympians wouldn’t beat ironman pros in the swim because they can’t sight etc.

Yep that’s the one, along with not being able to cope with waves or people around them.

Rebecca Adlington refused to try open water 'cos she is scared of all the creepy crawlies in there, so that is one Olympian distance swimmer I can claim to be better than

Phelps’ googled leaked in the 200m fly in Bejing and he swam 175m with his eyes closed, won gold, and broke the WR. Think he can handle a bit of a biff.
But also what biff, he would be in T1 while the rest of the field are 400m in.

Ive probably shared this story but a swimming friend was a water polo player, in his 20s at the time. He turned up to an OW swim with a couple of mates and had shorts and goggles in bag and they had sign up on day so thought “as Im here” and jumped into the 3.8k race. Won it in low 45s He said he hadnt swam over a 15m dash for years

I used to play water polo, at a high standard. All of my former teammates that have turned their hand to triathlon/OW swimming have taken to it like a duck to water (excuse the pun).

Here’s a classic bit of Slowtwitch warmth and sunshine from the annals- 2005- but interestingly the thread popped up again today.
The topic in question is wearing yellow livestrong bracelets, and the OP broadly supports them, but makes the mistake of suggesting maybe some people just wear them to look cool.

Er… You used an apostrophe in “doesn’t” and again in “can’t”- which is fine expect when wishing to direct a playground slur at everyone else, in which case according to TriTalk tradition apostrophes are not required . So yeah, you got it right in the first bit 
(Also you didn’t call anyone a schmuck- another difference 
)
