That’s ridiculous, he is much better off doing two 9 hour rides at the weekend annd run off the bike for 2 hours on Sundays. Same time cycling plus a brick session, he can do intervals during the week then.
Nah - he just needs to focus on his NUTRITION.
Apparently, Ironman is all about NUTRITION and letting THE CROWD GET YOU ROUND.

@pacha - I’m stealing that!
No, he should do his Brick run as Intervals; two birds, one stone.
Tell them to do the Paul Every training program. (Paul is an IM legend in Oz, also done Western States).
Ride the 350km to Canberra, do the HIM and ride back. (true story
)
Living local I know 10? Athletes that are going to be bang on cut off times, I know of 25+ more who will be near that mark.
I also know of one who’s training hard but his projected bike time is 5:55.
80kg @235 w.
Many of the slower athletes formed a pack… ish at the end of the bike in 2019 which probably kept the bike cut off figures down to just bad, if it rains or is really windy, or really really hot they could be even higher.
Several people on IMJ have little chance of completion, but I really hope they do.
I’ve offered him some help. fux sake a 10 week plan should be enough unless his idea of a good runner is 4hr standalone marathon, which is what i could do as a fat lanky SofP. oh and lets hope he can swim a 2min / 100 . chances are not
5.55 should be a very easy finish shouldn’t it? Unless he’s so knackered he’s going to walk it all?
even if he does a lot of walking with a 6hr bike ride, he’s on for a sub-13hr even if the swim is 1:30
He’s my training partner.
Good cyclist, if he’s near the cut offs … were all in the shite.
Yeah i was thinking that. Think I did a 6.30 at Wales and finished easily in the top half of the bike (maybe top third, can’t remember) and a sub 12 overall.
My 5:31 death march involved very little running iirc; although hard to say as I was pretty out of it tbh. But that did include a prolonged sit down in the shade to gather myself when I started feeling light headed. I don’t reckon I can have run more than about 15km that day.
I got the “run took longer than the bike” certificate that day
He should run under 4.
Suffers with gi issues previously.
yep i did 5:35 at midnightman after not eating for most of the race having chundered into the lake two or three times. That was a lot of walking just to keep HR down so i could stomach some fizzy cola bottles
You can defo run sub 4 with a bit of power walking, or stopping with cramp; been there a few times. In fact the only time I haven’t paused even for a quick toilet break was a 3:34, and I’ve gone quicker than that a couple of times with a pit-stop (but no walking).
I actually thought I was going to manage Hamburg without walking, but them cramp hit about halfway into Lap 3; after that I had to stop a few times to massage it and stretch, and ended-up with a 3:58. But I reckon without that, probably about 3:50, all steady jogging.
One of my better decisions at Wales in 2018 compared to 2017, was to do a shakedown ride on the Friday of one lap of the run course. Based on my knowledge of the year before, I picked out all my stop/start walk/run points.
on race day, this made it so much easier to be disciplined, rather than wing it like i did the year before. I told myself that it didn’t matter how good I felt, I was waking ‘here’ and conversely, however shitty I felt, I was running ‘here’.
It worked out, all except for the 4th lap, where I bridged two hills by walking both of them. IIRC, I completed the run leg 40 odd mins faster.
I was 3:55 something and never walked a step, obviously steady pace, the bike beat me up bad, and I was knackered at the start of the run.
The crowd and my tailwind got me through!

ah - the IM negative split - but the wrong one. I know someone who has about 5 or 6 of them!
OK so I went to join IMJ, but then sense returned, so I didn’t bother. But then the mega FB algorithm chucked the page into my ‘suggested pages’ area. Complete with this infamous thread!

Man o man. There are two cheeky chappies having a field day on there. People are seriously delusional!
I take it serious mostly
As there are some VERY good athletes on there too.
people tend to focus on the loonies, which is natural I guess.
George Samuel is always on there, he gets loads of grief, just for being very very fast.
Some yank tried to justify animal abuse, had to leave that thread … sharpish … prick
Yes it certainly goes both ways. I know i’m stereotyping a bit here, but a number of close mates have direct experience of being made to feel uncomfortable running with a group of beginners. So much so that they hid how good they were, PBs and stuff as people got really stuffy around them. As if they couldn’t possibly understand how it felt to be a beginner/slower athlete etc and flat refused to take any advice. Everything was met with the crappy old 'oh it’s alright for you … ’ bllsht.
I’ve had that a lot as well. Especially when in conversations about shorter distances - “oh it’s easy for you to run that 5km last night, but it was way harder for me”. That sort of stuff really wound me up for somne reason. Cos actually, no. It isn’t easier for me. In fact i was probably working 3 x as hard as you were from a relative perspective, cos i didn’t give up when it got a bit hard.
Anyway, i digress. There is a balance between being positive and realistic. It appears that core bunch of people on that group sit on the wrong side of that line. The internet makes everyone an expert, and it’s easy to hide behind your keyboard spouting all this ‘advice’.
I wonder how many people would be so willing to give their ‘advice’ to someone in person whilst training with them for example. I’m sure plenty of people on there are very nice people with good intentions. But it’s always the rotten apple in the pack that will attract your attention first and stay in your memory isn’t it!!
I’ll stop now. I’m having a grumpy afternoon trying to concentrate (i can’t in case you hadn’t noticed!! ) with a 2.5 yo bowling about the house in full absolute pest mode!!
