Race Day Nutrition and Storage

I genuinely can’t remember where i got it from now … but i know it wasn’t cheap, and there was barely any difference between each outlet, so whichever gives you the most Quidco cashback or free postage or whatever.

…actually i think it may have been Sigma Sports online now i think about it.

Was going to say @stenard buy it from Sigma and get them to price match it

  • I picked up a couple of their gels and a pouch of 320 to see what it’s like at the weekend!

Just about to head out on my first run with it. Post wedding with a mild hangover potentially not the best of testing grounds, but if my gut can handle it today…!

Surprisingly hard to mix! You really have to give it a prolonged vigorous shake. And I see now why they say its a “hydrogel” formula. It’s definitely viscous!

This stuff is miracle juice.

Between that and the next %s @stenard, it’s got to be a sub 2.30 mara you’re aiming for!

Are you all still talking about Maurten gels/drink?

yup

Yes. The two times I’ve used it I’ve really gotten on well with it. Actually tastes quite nice too

I wouldn’t go that far!!

Tbf I’ve only tried 320 sachets. Genuinely thought it did :grinning:

I agree. It grew on me, but I certainly wouldn’t say it was “nice”. I think that’s largely the texture as well … it really is a bit more gloopy. But I can see the upside of that when running. It’s far less likely to feel like it’s sloshing around in your stomach.

I have my final key long run on Sunday. 38k as 10k wu, into 22k at target MP. This weekend I just pre-fuelled with the 320 mix and then used normal gels. That way I was only changing one thing. Next weekend I’m going to pre-fuel with the 320 mix, then take on 2 Maurten hydrogels (1 each hour). If that goes well, then that will be my race strategy … likely supplemented with some mini bottles of 320 mix handed to my parents/gf that they can hopefully pass to me on the course

H5 Tropical is the taste gold standard right?

Gel wise (for me) it has to be lemon SIS isogels.

H5 mojito!!!

The SIS espresso ones.
Salty and coffee. Yummy!

But yes, the H5 mojito ones make a nice change.

Speaking of SIS: gels (short dated) are £4 + P&P for a box of 30 on SportPursuit currently. Three flavours left last time I checked.

I got a load of SIS packs at Lidl when they were doing them. It’s some of the best stuff I’ve used, certainly from a palatability view.

The last few years my drink has just been a big scoop of MP Dextrose powder with 1 or 2 H5 Tropical Zero tablets (basically a cheap version of Tailwind ). Only thing with dextrose is the white residue all over your bike.

I’ve been in the office less than an hour and have already eaten 2 apples, 2 bananas & a chocolate/almond cereal bar.

I found the 320 mix too sweet and didn’t like it at all. I use the 160 and find the taste neutral, like very slightly sweet plain water. I sometimes chuck in a nuun with it and that works well for me. A recent study found it didn’t out perform other carb drinks but it’s that age old of thing of if you can use a product and get the calories you need in with it, then it works. Also, costing a lot more than other drinks and gels make it much better than that other stuff.

That’s a good deal. Gels are still good for at 3yrs after the Use By date.
