Race Day Nutrition and Storage

I did that, ended up an expensive test as I threw it. Emon and lime is usually a good compromise on drinks but it was too sweet. Literally is just simple sugars and nothing special.

Torque Gels - there are probably others - have the same 2:1 malto/fructose mixture as the Nutramino Gels.

It may be an idea to try something close to your race Ggels if you can’t get the same.

Depends if you’re planning on using the on course or not. If you went for Maurten for example, you may choose to just carry it. Not sure how practical that will be. Pretty sure I carried all my gels though at Manchester when I did it. Stuffed in waistband of my shorts.

I’ve had them before, really tasty!

I should have guessed that there’s a range of opinions. I don’t like stuff which is too sweet so maybe give it a miss.

More than happy to wear my run belt with some gels in, I don’t tend to take a rolling picnic like the IMJ lot. There’s always the jelly babies people hand out on course, unless Covid has killed that off.

I’ve tried a lot of stuff, and for a standalone marathon, Maurten was literally game changing for me. I haven’t found it quite as impactful in longer tris, but it’s harder to judge. Using Maurten, and not using it, even in training on 20 mile long runs, was night and day (I did some experimentation over the weeks)

Was it gels you were using on the marathon or drink mixes?

Anyone have a working SIS discount code?

No. But as an aside, the Beta Fuel 80g drinks mix is great. Bought a box of 12 from SiS. None of that sickly sweetness you get with many energy/carb drinks…

I can’t look it up on my work’s computer, but I think The Cycling Podcast have one at the moment.

Found it thanks, looks like it doesn’t work on the bundles I’m buying so just completed the order.

21 gels and 2 electrolyte tubes for £30 so not too bad anyway

But what’s the ratio?

3:1

:scream:

For 69p a gel, I think I can cope with that

How do you clean the inside of soft flasks. One of mine has gone a bit mouldy, tried to use washing up liquid and rubbing the sides together from the outside and it tried sticking my finger in the top to scrape it off the inside.

Milton? Something else?

Witchcraft mate!!! It’s a perennial problem.

I would say a combpo of something like Milton with a small, flexible bottle brush. Sadly i’ve not managed to locate such a brush as yet, as the openings to mine are quite small Which then means a tiny brush that’s not stiff or long enough to get into the bottom.

Best tip is prevention rather than cure. Which i’m not always the best at!! Get them rinsed and dried asap after a run. As i’m sure you know, it’s the sports drinks that get funky. I then store them in the freezer to stop further build up of gunk.

Yeah, I think I left one with SIS stuff in it after a race for a couple of days and this is the result. Did know the tip about the freezer, might try that. You can never get them completely dry inside.

I usually only use mine for electrolyte or Tailwind. (and won’t be using them for Beta Fuel now! ) but they don’t seem to get too messed up. I do wash them out and rinse them after every use. I also let them dry for a good while before replacing the lid.

I tried to mix an SIS iso gel in water yesterday which didn’t work very well. I read online that the gels are like sweet gravy which has kinda put me off! Think I’m just going to mix the carb straight into bottles next time so that I don’t have to faff with gels. I had a 4h race yesterday and had 4 gels (88g carb), 2 litres on electrolytes on the 2hr bike + 1 gel & 500ml for the run.
