Race Day Nutrition and Storage

I’ll make it up just before the race starts, so Friday afternoon. It’s going to be much eaiser to pre mix a load of it in hard bottles, than try to do it on the fly in the soft flasks that i have (as experience has bitterly taught me). There’s just a risk that load of it gets dropped down the drain if i don’t drink it!!

Not directly at GB, but just flagging for general awareness … Maurten are now stocked by wiggle. Which means a nice 12% discount now with the loyalty program

The stuff tastes foul, but it works!

I know they say something on the box about not using it with salty water, as it affects the absorption rate.
So, how does chugging electrolytes with it affect that?
The product has zero electrolytes in it, so could lead to cramping.

Which brings me onto; if chugging down High5 Zero (other products are available) doesn’t affect it, then why not just chuck a tab in with the Maurten to make it taste nicer?

try it and let us know how you get on.

On my ultras i had one bottle of maurten one one side, and a bootle of High5 Zero on the other. Seemed to work for me on energy and electrolyte counts. I wonder if the tab would even dissolve, as it’s pretty hard to get the Maurten powder itself to dissolve!

Yeah, I have done similar. I spoke with the team at Precision Hydration and they didnt recommend mixing the two

Coincidentally this hit on two articles I just read in the last couple of days…

There’s this article in outside.com which it looks like GB already posted in November, but feels worth revisiting… I’m intrigued as to what you find it does for you that other drinks don’t? Is it a GI distress thing? Does it keep you going well? I’m interested because as I find myself doing some exercise again I have been thinking a bit about this subject and what (if anything) I should be investing in.

And another article, again by Alex Huchinson, (he wrote a book called Endure that I enjoyed) and the possible myth of electrolytes in cramping. Personally speaking I’ve not used any electrolytes in quite a while and not felt a significant difference; the only thing I think I notice is faster stomach emptying on a hot day, but that might just be perception. I also don’t think I’ve ever really cramped in a race, so maybe I’m just lucky/not pushing hard enough?

Reply to an old post Sid but I am a heavy sweater so go through a minimum of 500ml per hour, 1000ml if really hot and I need to run off the bike.

I think SIS Beta Fuel is the best thing I’ve ever found. also being heavy I was eating 80-110g carbs in food/gels per hour for 70.3 & IM because every sports drink I’d ever tried made me throw up, without exception. So I was drinking AND eating an obscene amount on the bike just to not cramp and have some energy.

Now I use Beta Fuel and barely eat anything which is a massive help in carrying load and also filling my belly. Not used in a race yet but really easy to get a sachet in the pocket of jersey or tri-suit but will need to stop and fill bottle on full distance

I~ve had lots of problems with cramping in races (and training) and keeping on top (or not) of my electrolytes seems to be the solution/cause every time. Now that may well be placebo, who knows, but on my N=1 sampling, i’d rather not risk it and see what happens without! I’m a heavy sweater, so need to keep on top of this as best i can.

With the Maurten, i was looking for the most calorie dense products that could get into ma belly (full Fat B*stard from Austin Powers voice). My events were long ultras though, so i was looking for quick nutrition i.e. into aid station, top up water, sachet in, go. Then i have like 300+ cals in the bottle to sip on as i run. Not so easy to do with real food for example. Didn’t have any GI issues, but did get sick of it after a while as it just doesn’t taste as nice. Used Tailwind quite happily in the past, but it was giving me half as many cals, so i wanted to dry something more cal dense. It worked.

As i have commented on in other threads, there is a limit of using this stuff, for me at least. And that sat at about 12-14hrs.

But it is expensive. I’d deffo use it again for races of up to 100km. On 100 milers, i’d probably get more of a mix on. If i do 50km and under, i’d be up for trying their gels. It has worked in the past, so why not.

PAH!

Don’t come on here and start talking about “The Science,” leave that to The Covid Thread

What did Maurten do for me that other drinks didn’t?
Emptied my wallet far quicker…and we all know I’m a sucker for getting fleeced.
The 320 stuff has 80g carbs per 500ml, using High5 to it’s recommended dosage (47g/2 scoops per 500ml) works out at 44g carbs.
Therefore, you can get more carbs in with Maurten…
HOWEVER because High5 Energy Drink is a 2:1 fructose mix, you can consume substantially more carbohydrates – up to 90g per hour in fact, so…you can whack a smidge under four scoops of it in a 500ml bottle to hit the 90g per hour mark, which makes it far better value than Maurten.

But yes, I have previously had GI distress from High5 drink and gels, but have never tried simply double the scoops in High 5 (I’d probably do 4 scoops for 750ml, as I tend to get a thirst!)

The GI distress could be from just the gels?
As I rarely get it when solely cycling on the powder and zero stuff.

Cramping
I tend to cramp, so anything placebo I can use to combat it, I’m all for it.
I also sweat, so have a need to replace electrolytes lost through that, do I not?

So…whilst I do believe that Maurten delivers little to no GI distress for me, along with a good hit of carbs, I won’t be shelling out for another box of it until I’ve tested no gels and doubling my High5 dose.

Trialling the “mix”

Dissolve the effervescent Zero tab in water, add the 160 to the water.
Boom.
Done.
Simples.

Still tastes like seaweed.
Reminds of going to my grandparents and having Carrageen Moss pudding as a kid.

That’s the milder mix though, i had the 320 before.Wonder if it would mix as well?

Interesting point though that the high5 doesn’t help with the taste! may be better with 2 x bottles of 160 mix (to get the 1l of water that comes with it) and then use salt tabs for the electros … thining aloud for myself in the future.

I have ran out of 320 and don’t intend to buy anymore.
However…320 is SUPER useful to down on the way to a race at stupid o’clock.
Any sports drink/food is proper hard to neck at 3am, so if you can get double carbs down, then that’s okay.

But, like I say, if a double concentrate High5 tastes okay (I am imagining it to be sweeter than raw sugar!) then that’s way way cheaper.

I reckon the tumeric and ginger would have gone with the seaweed flavour better.
Thing is Carrageen’s Moss is quite nice when it’s dried and taken as a little snack.

never heard of it, no idea what it is (off to google)

The latter. I have tried a lot of nutrition products. I have never felt “strong”, even on a long steady training run once I approach 20 miles. The very first time I tried Maurten 320, I felt like a new person from 15 miles onwards. I got 3 or 4 further weeks of training in with it, continually building fitness whilst using it (just a single full bottle before the run), then on my final easier long run before the marathon I tried just half a packet of 320 instead of a full one. I felt crap again after 15 miles.

At the time, I called it miracle juice after my very first run with it. I’m totally sold on it. I’ve never felt so strong glycogen wise with anything else. And let to a 16+ minute marathon PB (2:48). It does get a bit tiresome on the palate, but I think moreso in the fact it’s quite syrupy in texture. I don’t really mind the flavour, but maybe that is part of it after a while. I’ve still not yet had a chance to use it for an IM, but used it at the Cotswold Classic in August, and ran really well despite having done very little run training. I would put that down to the decent energy stores provided by the Maurten I’d consumed on the bike.

The gels are more like clumps of jelly, rather than a traditional gel. They go down well. The taste of the caffeine one was not nice though.

Thanks @PCP
Having tried it out on long rides & runs I used Beta Fuel during the Weekend Warrior and it kept me ticking along nicely avoiding the cramps I had last year. I topped it up with mini Mars bars and Milky Ways on the bike and an sis go gel on the run. I’ll definitely use it for Ironman next year. Its pricey, but good stuff :+1:

For me it is cheaper than eating gels and bars.
Well done last week btw.

Thanks @Poet and @stenard… think I’ll give it a go if I get off my arse and do some exercise.

Using this thread as I’ve run out of nearly all nutrition

I’ve got a few PH 1500 sachets left and a couple of SIS Beta Fuel but run out of all gels and electrolyte tabs and need to stock up.

Do I

  1. Buy SIS gels and electrolytes again?
  2. Try Tailwind (seems to come recommended - which flavours?)
  3. Pickup some cheaper High5 stuff, had it before and they’re ok
  4. Try Maurten (again recommended on here)

Training for Manchester marathon which are giving out Nutramino Carbo Gels and aren’t available to purchase so can’t exactly try them out before hand. This will be for during long training runs and maybe taking for races if I book some more in.
