Dude. You’ve hit 100% on my fuelling strategy right there.
Can’t be beaten.
I think you’re correct about the hydrogels and think that is marketing black magic. The real benefit of it and now Beta Fuel is the sugar ratios are different. They take a greater advantage of fructose using a different cell membrane transport system so get more carbohydrate where it needs to be. Jeroen Swart from Team UAE has apparently poured over the work and he says it is the best carb drink out currently because of that. I do wonder f they have a patent on more than the hydrogel stuff as Beta Fuel ratio is almost the same but not quite.
Wasn’t sure where to put this, that would get some decent hits…
Had anyone used one of those little hydration belts before, with the little mini bottles?
I’ve a terrible history of cramping at the very end of most of my big races. I’m a heavy sweater and am planning my strategy for Cots.
@stenard recommended the PH stuff, so I’m going to get a bottle of their 1500 strength stuff for the bike and fuel up on Maurten for my carbs - I’m tried and tested on that stuff so see no reason to change.
Then I was thinking of going with some more PH 1500 on the run, with Maurten gels. I hate carrying bottles and stuff in my hands, so something like this appealed.
Any experience from anyone? Do they bounce, or rub etc?
Personally I couldn’t. It would annoy the shit out of me while running. I’d be more inclined to go and deposit the bottles the night before or in the morning somewhere on the run course if you want specific nutrition.
I have a similar one from Nathan and use it for long runs and they don’t bounce around. When I first had it I tried with the bottles at the back and they did move so span it around to the front and it’s fine.
I’ve used the full vests for years and they’ve been fine. But obvs waaaay ott for this. ![]()
Might have a mate with one actually, so thinking I’ll see if I can borrow that to try it out. Could run with just the one tiny bottle in my hand if needed I guess.
Think I’d be nervous about stashing a bottle that it wouldn’t then be there! ![]()
- 6" x 4.5" main compartment
Not gonna get much sand in there GB!!
Yeah - they annoy the hell out of me.
Either the buckle digs in, or the Velcro comes Loose
I even cut the buckle off my number belt and stitched it back together at the perfect size ![]()
Hang on… @gingerbongo
I’ve got this I never use. It’s missing two bottles, but it’s free!!! I’m going to the post office at midday, so let me know
The hammer gel flasks are actually good for this.
Yeah I carried a gel flask at my last LD. I emptied a cup into it each time. Easier to drink from. Could carry it for longer and when I was done it just collapses into the hand. Oh and less sloshing of fluid.
Each flask conveniently holds 300g of sand… ![]()
Personally I can’t bear running with bouncy bits attached but don’t mind a few gels in trisuit pocket
I saw somebody at the oly on Saturday with what looked like a hydration backpack on
Cheers for the offer but I got impatient and just ordered one! ![]()
It may well go back though!
I couldn’t carry anything like that. I’ll be crunching down some electrolyte tablets the day before & will have a few more on the bike leg.
Hopefully getting out on Friday - & any other decent days we get - as the forecast is for hot, hot weather & this will help with heat adaptation.
Yeah I’ll probably hate it and just send it back.
I tried the tabs when I did that mara in November. But still cramped at the end. But then it wasn’t super hot or anything and I hadn’t done many long runs so that could have purely been down to the muscle damage of running 42kms unprepared as opposed to hydration issues.
When?
10th July?
Weather is
this weekend.
Only nice on Friday, really.
Tuesday 28 Jun - Tuesday 12 Jul
Higher pressure and a northwesterly wind flow are likely to persist throughout the end of June and into early July. This will continue to bring generally unsettled and showery weather for most, with possible thundery outbreaks in the south. Temperatures are most likely to be near or slightly below average, but with some warm spells still possible.
Yup, Friday is the only decent day.
I bought some fruit shoots that my daughter disliked the least then washed the bottles out and use them for gels or maurten in a race.Obvs not maurten gels as I doubt you’d ever get them out of a bottle like that.
Yeah that’s what made me think of it. When I did that 30km run I nicked my daughters little school water bottle, elastic banded a gel to it and left it beside the car to pick up at half way. And it wasn’t too, too bad holding something that small.
Gels I’m fine with in the pockets etc. I’ve discovered that I like to sip little and often on a longer run.
I used one for Mallorca for the first time. Wanted some liquid Maurten with me for the 42km, rather than relying solely on gels. Didn’t find it annoying, and used it in training.
I actually have one of the PH belts now too, as I got some for Christmas and they were doing them free for Black Friday. Not used it yet though. Still packed away somewhere. It was described as being lighter than the cheap decathlon one I bought for Mallorca
