Race Day Nutrition and Storage

I’m with Adam, assume it’d open on a bump downhill

Wasn’t there a guy one of us on here knew, who did 3D printing for aero storage boxes, that’s what you want.

I remember years back there was a guy on ST I think who had designed a box to 3d print for the Cervelo P3. The one i Have has a bolt about the bottom bracket but they didnt actually manufacture anything to go on it

I have the aero pouch for the P3. (unless I gave it to Adam?) I also have the Vittoria split bottle spares thing which I have/had in the BTS XLab Gorilla Grip cage. I think I had two Co2 bottles, adaptor, tyre levers, tube and two allen keys.

One bottle on the down tube and one for water BTA.

Guy on eBay

Did one for me and poet IIRC? I may have a job for him myself.

I’ll drop some names later

Very good, well better than an upside down storage bag with a Velcro strap for sure!

I got him to do one for my Stealth too. Really nice guy, lives just outside of Guildford so I picked mine up!

The one he did for my e119 looks like it came with the frame.

Bizarrely he sent two, only charged for one. I think he’s a bit of a perfectionist, the second one fits my e116 perfectly ! I’ve never tried it though ?!

I might have a bike build this winter and I’ll be asking for his help.

What’s the latest thinking on IM nutrition then?

I’ve realised it’s time i started thinking about it!

60-90g of carbs per hour was always the rough target. I found my old planning sheet from 12 years ago, and it seems like a let of product. I had like 17/18 gels in a bottle on the frame … but then i did end up with some GI issues on the run.

I’ve been getting on well with the Maurten stuff over the past few years, up to about 10-12 hours anyway. Only issue is how to carry enough cals, as i would prefer the drinks to tonnes of gels. But happy to do a mix. There seems to be a massive proliferation of companies on the market these days - loads more than there used to be.

Styrkr and Voom (new to me) do some pretty carb heavy, punchy options, as do Precision Hydration. Then you have the usual suspects like Powerbar and SiS (not so keen from experience), High 5 (i use a lot in training as they’re cheap, but not so high carb levels), Torq, Gu, OTE etc (not used before).

I’m seriously considering the camelbak down the chest option, just as a way to get a good bit of electrolytes in, as i’m a sweater. Would probably chuck some of the strong PH stuff in there.

Would like to have some solid bar type things in the rubber bento box. There are heaps and heaps of options there on a site like Xmiles. Any good ones that people have tried lately? I used the rank powerbar ones last time (mainly due to them being the course sponsors).

I think it’s still powerbar on the bike now and then Maurten on the run? If that’s the case, then i can fuel my run using the aid stations with a few caff options in pockets.

Oh and obviously there’s Tailwind!!!

Any other thoughts ?

I have always stuck with High 5, never felt a need to change. My strategy for IM was what they recommended. I wanted to get plenty of water in as it would be hot and I sweat a lot. You use the energy drink powder to make a strong syrup and have that in a normal bottle with markings on it. Then as you approach an aid station, squeeze a measure into your BTA then take water from the aid station and top it up, blow down the straw to mix it.

Had another bottle with the caffeine mix drink which I used first, not as the syrup just mixed as the normal bottle. Also had some bars, but cut them up into small chunks.

Never used it in anger but tried it a couple of times in training and it worked well

Yeah good call. I just may not end up with a BTA bottle on my current setup, so makes things a bit trickier.

I wonder if i could make a double strength bottle of Maurten 320 (or similar) and then just sip that over 2 hours. It’s a bugger to dissolve normally, so i’m guessing the powder probably wouldn’t play nice. Thing is this stuff is too expensive to buy now and experiment!!

My guts are pretty tough, so i’d be happy to go with a big gel mix in my small aero bottle on the downtube. I just wonder whether the Maurten ones i like would flow well enough. Might have to try a more ‘liquid’ gel to utilise that strategy. Then a bottle of strong energy mix BTS, bars chopped up in the bento. Take a few bananas at aid stations, and maybe risk the aid station pissy energy drinks for the last couple of hours.

Food for thought though, as it were.

For that 9.5 hour half X, I ate loads of Nakd and Trek bars on the hour on bike, also the odd other (do-goody vegan) chocolate bar and flapjack. Banana before swim. Think I was so overloaded with carbs that on the run I did manage 3 gels, but not sure that I really needed them,
Also just water, but 5 salt tabs per hour as I sweat profusely.

Did you just strap them to your bar/have them in a jersey pocket (assume you went cycle jersey as opposed to a trisuit at an event like that).

I do like naked bars, I use them on my ultras a lot. :+1:

Ah sorry in my what used to be known as bento, topeak midloader frame bag, can fit loads into that

People laugh but I did my best 70.3 probably my best race on Tailwind.

1 Banana I didn’t need but the rest was only powder, full distance is a little different, but a 10:35 Bolton time was TW only in 2020?

There’s a reason it was product of the year one year and why some tri snobs don’t like it.

( I know it’s just salt and sugar before I get any biff)

Make two and leave one at special needs?

I experimented a lot with this for LCW. I find just gels or energy drink leaves me feeling empty, even if the calorie intake is in theory high enough. So I alternated gel and nakd bars, with a non-sport, full-fat flatjack thrown in at halfway. Drink was left as electrolytes.

Carried the bars in a bento type top-tube bag, gels in jersey pocket and refilled bottles at an aid station. But I wasn’t running util the next day. I was pretty dehydrated when I finished and didn’t eat enough to run off the bike - but also couldn’t face much for a while - think that was the dehydration.

Basically I needed to practice. Gels alone didn’t work for me. A brick run of 30-40 mins is usually enough to tell me if I’ve under-fueled.

I generally prefer some solids at the start of the bike leg like maybe a flapjack or even a mars bar. And jelly sweets but usually go would probably go with Ucan again, or homemade with corn starch.

Edit: it’s a sea swim with a long run to your bike, doonhammer mentioned something a few weeks ago to help rinse your mouth of the saltwater but can’t remember what it was? mints or something?

I’d probs go with flat coca cola for that. :+1:

They actually handed out coke into T1 at Bolton this year. Not done that on my two trips to Tenby though.

I was thinking of carrying three 750ml bottles of 320 mix and if I needed any more I’d pick-up their Powerade mix I don’t rate it though

Also planning on alternating between a gel and a bar. I reckon I could go for a mars bar early doors

Not done it for a while but I think I did try to mix two packets of 320 mix and it didn’t go well, it’s just way too thick. I think I’ve read that Maurten say you can mix a gram or so of salt into your bottle then you should t have to worry about salt tabs etc…
