Race Day Nutrition and Storage

Tailwind…?!
70.3 9 scoops
A banana in t2
Didn’t need the nana…
I have 100+ gels and bars going out of date

So from memory, and what I removed from my bento post-race, I consumed the following at the 113:

1 SIS isoGel 15 min before the start
Bike:
1x SIS isogel 20 mins into bike
~1300ml CHO drink on the bike (homemade 1x Zero tab plus 60g Dextrose powder/per bottle) It was pretty chilly.
4x chunks of SIS energy bar (1 & 1/3 bars)
1x SIS isogel ~5km from bike finish.

Run:
Homemade bottle from T2 (600ml Zero tab + 50g Dextrose). Drank in first 9km.
1x SIS isoGel @ ~12km + water
1x H5 IsoGel @ ~16km + water (by the volleyball area - lap 3).

I took the SIS stuff with me, and grabbed the H5 gel at the aid station before I wanted to consume it. Basically chug it 200m before next aid station, get water there to wash it down. I always have a get in my pocket. Rinse & repeat.

Surprised you ran with a 600ml bottle for 40 odd mins. I can’t stand having anything in my hands when running (except poles)

I do it in my training runs, so I’m used to it. It’s a 750ml cheapo mineral water bottle, scrunched-up so easier to hold. I’ll see if I can find a pic of me from the race to demonstrate.

I’m the same. It’s something I think I need to find a solution to tho, as I feel the fact my long runs are done with zero hydration is a limiter in their effectiveness. I used to run with a hydration backpack, but got out of the habit this spring.

Yes, by the time I got up to 23km, I found I was struggling in the final kms without any fluid/kcals. This is exacerbated by the fact my run home is a gradual ascent for most of the way, especially up to the village at the end.

I use one of those belts that takes a standard bike bottle at an angle at the back. It’s also got a couple of small pockets for gels, car keys etc. Really don’t notice it after first couple of runs and can get the bottle in out easily without stopping.

For training (and ultras) i have a very nice race vest that i use. But obviously couldn’t use that in a tri/mara type event without feeling like a right bell!!

I’d probably go down the route of those little race belts with a few tiny bottles instead. I find i grip the bottle too tight in my hand, and that creates uneven tension through my arm, into my shoulder etc.

You’re right, because everyone rocking around in their lycra unitards, compression socks, visors and sun glasses look soooo cool :sunglasses:

So how does the race day hula hoop thing work? Salt and vinegar decanted into a bento frame box?

That’s how I did it, although also mixed in with a generous helping of haribo.

How do you manage nutrition during marathons? I do training runs up to 14 miles with nothing. Not gone past 14 yet but will possibly need to and will want to practice nutrition.

When I was marathon training I used to run loops and stash bottles at the start point. Not very glamorous if your idea of a long run is to explore further afield but it worked for me at that time. I don’t like carrying anything when running.

If I run long I can go about 15-16 without fuel and then start going downhill quickly. If I want to run longer and don’t want to cut the pace back massively I use a running vest with Salomon soft flasks with water or energy drink, and maybe one or two food items (sweets, savouries, as desired) in a vest pocket.

I’ve done this a lot. At the moment, on the long run home, I’m stashing a bottle near the start, doing a loop, then coming back & collecting it when I head for home. I don’t mind carrying a (cheap disposable) 500ml bottle in my hand, most don’t like it. I run in an old bike jersey, so I can stash the bottle when it gets lighter, and my bulky work pass. Phone goes in a pocket on back of trishorts.

Hydration vest or backpack.
They’re great.
Pockets and enough liquid for up to 3hrs.
I’ve got an Inov8 15l one and it’s brilliant.

But then you look like one of those long sock wearing trail runners that plague our lane (we live on the Cotswold Way) :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I don’t think triantelopes are on solid ground there.

Depends! I don’t think calf guards are a-la-mode in Tri these days?
