Buy the smart trainer and run in Next% 💁
is that the lifetime of the alphas? in which case you should be fine pretty soon
He’s not even told her hes brought 1 for each foot yet
“hes brought 1”
So. Many. Things. Wrong.
Youll have to be a bit more pacific
DO YOU WANT TO GET SILENCED?
There are documented “features” now on connection issues, it’s frustrating at best. If I want to use pedals with Neo as controllable trainer, I need to unpair everything, pair neo as power and cadence, then as controllable trainer, then unpair power/cadence and repair both with th re pedals. Sometimes it still doesn’t work. Its got to stage where it can take 20mintues to start riding and I’m fucked off that software which is 7 years old still has such basic issues, issues that are introduced and never fixed.
You can’t go grammar nazi on him and then use one of those fucking sentences with a full stop between each word. We’re not 6yrs old, it emphasises nothing.
Stop.It.Right.Now.
YES. It. Does.
I’m still confused as to why ST banned “Wow. Just, wow.” It was the perfect response to anything Trump.
Can’t you just use non-PM pedals? I would to avoid all that faff!
can just use the trainer as power source yes, but I get less power
Just knock a kg off your weight then to compensate?
I already weigh 45kg
Reminds me I need to go on a Zwift diet
SPEED AND POWER! as Jezza would say.
Its not going to make the treadmill any faster trust me. Personally I find the zwift running just a distraction as apposed to an engaging experience like the cycling is. Happy it gives me some data that I’d otherwise forget as soon as I finish a treadmill session.
I have found tho - picking a road (ideally dirt) that goes uphill is hugely satisfying running past all the cyclists
TLDR: Saris H3 Smart trainer + Apple TV + a wall mount telly is a good setup for Zwift for under a grand.
As I may have mentioned elsewhere , I finally upgraded to a smart trainer with Apple TV after 18 months on Zwift using a dumb wheel on and a laptop PC.
Have only ridden the smart trainer twice but thought it might help someone else considering the same, if I put some thoughts down while the change is fresh in my mind. First ride was a short experimental pootle in Innsbruck last night, and then a 25 minute B race this morning.
2020 set up
Bike: Carrera cyclo-cross bike Alu from Halfords, 10 years old, shimano deore 2*8 speed, integrated brake shifters on the drops
Trainer: Tacx flow wheel on
Power meter: Garmin vector pedal, left only
Zwift on: laptop
Fan: Screwfix
new setup
Bike: same
Trainer: Saris H3
Zwift on: Apple TV + 40 inch wall mount TV
cost of upgrading
Saris H3: £549 probikehut
Apple TV: £90 Ebay (second hand)
40 inch TV: £349 Argos
WiFi extender: Tenda £19 Amazon
Remote control for fan: £10 Amazon
First thought about the smart trainer: it’s quiet. The wheel on Tacx was really loud. I genuinely wonder if I have damaged my hearing a bit using it for the last year. The Saris is practically silent in comparison, i am realising there are background noises in the Zwift game which I had not noticed before. Also, everyone else in the house is happier because it doesn’t sound like a plane is taking off upstairs.
Actually riding it. It’s different. I’m not sure how best to explain it. Riding a wheel on dumb trainer with a power meter is ok, you kind of get used to how to do it. But you have to concentrate and know when you increase the effort, or you quickly get dropped on rises. Somehow the smart trainer doesn’t feel like that. The road is suddenly rising, and oh look I’m doing 330W, how did that happen? This is going to take a bit of getting used to, I’m so used to springing into action at the sight of a hill that I went off the front a couple of times this morning.
Also, the response to increased effort seems to be instant. The old setup, it would take several seconds before increased power seemed to feed through. And accelerating the rear wheel took time. I’m not sure if this is true of all wheel on setups or just mine. But now, just putting more force through the pedals seems to register instantly. I’m not sure why this us the case but feel it’s a good thing. I don’t know if it feels exactly like cycling in the real world, but it’s a much nearer thing than the wheel on dumb trainer.
Accuracy. Well I don’t know how accurate my Garmin pedal is, but this morning I dual recorded to see how comparable the saris would be.
Garmin vector pedal:
Saris:
They agree within 1 watt. I’ll take that. And although the power meter shows this morning’s ride was no easier in terms of watts produced (4.1 wkg average for 25 mins) it kind of felt easier. Perhaps as more variability, got to soft pedal a little more and then was able to produce more power in the hills? Not sure. But average HR was lower than for comparable efforts on the old setup.
Connectivity and ease of use: the laptop was a pain. Slow to load and update, unreliable connection, jerky graphics. The Apple TV is like a dream in comparison. Everything is instant and once you get used to the weird remote control.
Choice of smart trainer: I wanted to spend about £500 and had almost decided on a Wahoo Kickr Core. But reading reviews there seems to be a problem with kickr and Apple TV that cadence and power are transmitted on 2 different USB channels. Apple TV only supports 3 USB channels, and one is used by the remote and you’d want to use another for HR (I have a TickR). So as I understand it, if you have a kickr you cannot connect directly to your Apple TV and have all 3 of power, cadence and HR. You have to connect to a phone and then pair the Apple TV with that. A minor hassle but I wanted as easy a setup as possible so when I read that the Saris transmits everything on just one channel, that was the decider (plus thanks to @mw22 for pointing out a good deal). I am not 100% sure I’m correct about the KickR but this is what I have read. Anyway, the Saris just connected instantly and worked fine straight out of the box.
Just some initial thoughts. Early days & if anything else springs to mind I’ll say. But it took me quite a while to understand how to get a good Zwift setup, this feels like it’s good
