Sean Conway Iron 102

Eye catching kit again :joy::rofl::joy:

Remind me how he funds all this again. His wife clearly wants him to hurry up and get it done/quit  literally left holding the babies.

Proper bromance forming here

On a side note, I’ve just finished reading ‘Coasting’ by Elise Downing - she ran round the coast of Britain a few years ago.
Whilst she was running, she met Sean on his British coast triathlon and reported him to be a lovely bloke

Erm…

Pacers are allowed on this record so I’m encouraging strong riders to come and cycle with me. Average pace will be around 19mph so please make sure you are comfortable cycling in a group of people at that speed.

Really??? Wasn’t it more like 14mph last time?

If yesterdays route is anything to go by - he’s going much flatter this time round - ~700m ascent I believe

(Well, Doonies ride anyway)

He’s not my Strava friend :sob:

The route is pretty much the same.

I had to get my calculator out but I reckon I did around 17mph yesterday & 17.5mph last year. It was pretty much just me last year & although for the most part there were 3 of us taking the lead the weather yesterday was pretty grim at points   :cloud_with_rain:.

I’ll also admit that knocking out a century+ this early in the season was a bit of a stretch for me but I hope to clock on & put in another shift as a domestique when my glass back feels like cooperating  .

Weather the next couple of days isn’t looking too kind for him.

What are the expectations in terms of how long you spend with Sean? Did you book in?

Last year, most days he just did laps of the cyclepath/river didn’t he? This route looks a bit more interesting (I’m very much of the opinion that routes can be too flat).

17mph is a decent pace to keep up for 102 days. If he can keep it to c14hrs a day then he’s got a chance of getting decent sleep / recovery. My recollection from last year was he was taking much longer each day (I know I could scroll up but I’m too lazy)

I agree about flat routes. IM Hamburg was something like 400m and it was relentless (the strong winds and extra 6km didn’t help). I think I did a PB at the 180k mark, but man it was hell on the back/crotch.

IM Florida was the same - flat as a pancake for 90% of the route with just one climb of note (a bloody bridge!) but kills the back, arms and shoulders as you’re in aero position for so long. But was a PB for an IM bike leg for me.

Roth seems to balance it out nicely with 1300m; plenty of flat, but also a few proper hills in there.

IMWA is the same. Just using the same gear and muscles, never changing position.

I can’t remember - without scrolling back either  - how many he managed before succumbing to his ankle/calf injury last year - 6 or 7 - but I think he only did the last cycle on the river/cyclepath.

Sean is very much looking for company on the cycle & you can just rock up & join for as long or as little you like? The easiest ways to meet up with him would be from Cleos at Holt village square where he is stopping to refuel for his 3 loops or alternatively you could try doing the loop CW & hope to bump into him.

There is a tracker on his website.

ETA On today’s tracker I can see that he has slightly changed the loop at Bangor on Dee…so Cleo’s might be the safest option.

Yeah, that makes sense. I’ve just realised I was between contracts when he started last year … but too slow to get organised before he pulled out.
Now I’m working it might be more of a challenge to find a slot, will look at the calendar.

Would be better for me if he was cycling later in the day but I guess he’ll be too awkward to adapt to my needs

I reckon I could meet him at 7am in Kinnerton and ride for an hour on a weekday.

Weekends are looking busy but I could probably do with a century ride so will find a day somewhere

That would be a good meeting point, he takes a RH turn at The Royal Oak :white_check_mark:.
