Sean Conway Iron 102

A book deal, some corporate sponsorship, a few chat show appearances, asked to do motivational speaking & then onto podcasts I guess.

Ergo, how are eight gold medals any more recognisable than seven?

Or, how recognisable is 0.02 seconds?
The difference between Jim Hines’ 9.95 and then Calvin Smiths 9.93 100m record … nearly 15 years later!!!

Like my 10km or mile PB :joy:
Utterly meaningless.
Most people just think it’s quick.
But to them it’s no different to A N Other measure of time :woman_shrugging:t4:

exactly why people climb mountains

But a mountain has a summit, there is an end to endeavour. Anybody know (without googling), who has the record for the most ascents of Everest or K2? because that’s what this is.

Can’t say I paid much attention to this, Iron Cowboy or the previous attempt…

But if day 2 was “tough” and you are already doing 16+ hour days - surely thats not sustainable?

Id’ve thought kit being on point was paramount. The flappy bike kit, no aero bars - just seems wasted watts. Bad enough on a single ironman.

I’d completely agree re kit. When your doing 180km a day for 3 months even any marginal gains are gonna add up to huge amounts over that time period. Surely you want to be ‘wasting’ as little amount of energy and giving yourself as much recovery time as possible?

Ooh!!! Me me me!!!

I do :joy:

It’s a Sherpa with a woman’s name - Rita Sherpa.

What do I win?

Whenever somebody like this candidly discusses how they manage these endurance trials, they mention the money; somebody has to pay for it.

If you don’t want charity or loans, you earn it yourself … that’s why I’m surprised the £45K for the butt tattoo is going to charity!

wrt Aero Gainz,

I can only imagine he looks in the mirror & thinks “Yeah, I’m fucked.”

Re bike position, I guess he needs something that isn’t going to wreck his back if he’s planning on being on the bike for that long every day for 102 days :man_shrugging:

I guess he’s also hoping for people to turn up and pace him, which wouldn’t happen in a “real” IM

You’ve obviously not watched Barcelona, or certain pro-women (allegedly)

Probably a Sherpa/Climbing Sardar!

Surviving one ascent of K2 is a miracle!

Here you go. Surprise surprise, all Nepalese. Top westerner is Kenton Cool with 16 :open_mouth: That’s a tough shift. I ‘bumped’ into him a few times in Aviemore & the Alps back in the day (mid 00s), and whilst we never spoke properly (he was always guiding a group), there was generally a look of recognition “oh you again”

I think Kenton Cool must look about 60 these days after all those ascents; they take a massive toll. Tbh I’d get bored of it; how to turn your hobby into an utter chore. Of course he’s a celeb in those circles though, which may be a bonus, but I don’t think he’s bothered about that sort of thing; pretty grounded I think.

We are contemporaries leading parallel lives; which crossed at several points back when I was doing big hills. But then I went native, got married, had kids and did Ironmans for many years. I see his UK home is not that far from here either.

It’s not, I used to see him in Ciren Waitrose. I tried chatting a couple of times but received a polite brush off

Bibury is in cycling range

Sounds like you were stalking him

Enough to know it’s ‘near’ Bibury

The alternative regular in Waitrose was Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen so forgive me for preferring to stalk Kenton.

I knew Kenton when he was starting out (we were both members of the North London MC).
He had a (deserved) reputation for for being reckless - if you’d asked me to pick any club member who’d likely not return from one trip to Everest, I think many of us would have picked him!

He was however immensely determined. I remember him being in a wheelchair one summer (mid 90s??) after breaking both his legs. He wanted to watch people climbing but it was a long, off-road path to the crag. He didn’t have crutches so attached his shoes to his knees and crawled.

On 102 related matters, it looks like Sean has discovered the Saltney ferry road to avoid having to dodge the Sealand Road retail park traffic.

Given how windy it is today, he’s done well to be finishing the bike leg soon
