Sean Conway Iron 102

In my Tri Club we have a guy who does Deca’s… in fact he is just about to do one in Switzerland in a couple of weeks. He trains on the same flat bike route and same flat run course and only swims in the pool… he lives in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but swims, runs and cycles only on the same flat boring routes for 20 hours per week. People like that are clearly not wired that same. I often go for a run or a ride, with only the vaguest notion where I am going, normally I take my gravel bike as my routes sometimes result in large sections of gravel track… I know it drives some of my cycling companions crazy that I don’t have a plan, so guess I am wired very differently too

In my first running club there was a guy whose idea of a perfect running route was a continuous, straight, flat, featureless road.
I, on the other hand, seek out the complete opposite in all my sporting adventures.
That’s life isn’t it? It would be very dull (not to mention crowded) if we all wanted to do the same things.

I’m not really familiar with Iron Cowboy but struggle with how you could apply that to Sean Conway. Is swimming the length on the UK not inspirational?
I think his triathlon round the border of Wales is a novel concept too, quite clever actually.

I’m also not sure what you mean about taking risks - it strikes me that Conway is doing exactly that in his adventures.

I didn’t know we were in the same club once upon a time? :joy::see_no_evil:

What’s risky about it; compared to cycling to work every day in rush hour traffic for example? He’s done some interesting stuff, but now he’s clutching at straws to remain relevant imho. What ground is he breaking here, what is he proving or discovering? The reason I’m biting is because he has been heralded as one of Britain’s great explorers, which is nonsense given our history.

A single parent overcomes & achieves more than this, every day of the week.

Discuss.

I don’t think he is trying to stay relevent, except in his own mind. Personally I think that there is big difference between him and Iron Cowboy

It’s his beard I have issues with

He holds a few records. I have a twitter account - I’ll follow him

I don’t think he’s big on self-promotion, I had never heard of him until he tried to do something remarkable related to a minority sport I enjoy on my doorstep.

As I’ve said before I enjoyed my time with him, my problem is his lack of planning when taking on these challenges which just seems to be his way. It’s certainly not my way

Anyway, today his tracker isn’t working as his phone got wet when he was swimming :joy: .

I’ve got twitter but rarely go there. He puts stuff on Instagram, mostly stories.

Don’t mind me, I’m just a grump who prefers modesty to a fault, and maybe Sean would blush at the buzz around him.

It looks like we’re viewing the definition of risk differently here. You seem to be requiring some element of danger, I have used it in the context of attempting something that you might fail at.
Equally, any undertaking will have different degrees of challenge about it. Clearly, the triathlon round Wales is less arduous than the attempt to do 100 consecutive IM triathlons. That doesn’t mean it’s easy though.
Conway’s list of successes is very eclectic - from relatively straightforward to multi-day ultras. He seems to me to pick things that are interesting to him as well as challenging.

I think you’re being deliberately mean spirited here.

Lack of planning? Ha ha I like the sound of him already! I think we’d get on

Maybe that’s what makes it an adventure?

Probably.

One for another thread really. It’s school holidays, the kids are constantly bored, I’m trying to WFH and keep them happy, and people lauding the challenges of living the Peter Pan life has me eye rolling. I’m bored. I think all people who’ve lived that life and then become responsible parents know how that feels; unfortunately my kids think going to Home Bargains or watching You Tube is exciting, despite my best efforts.

Like I say, for another thread.

There is an element of the absurd about it. But then looking at a lot things - that feeling could bubble to the surface - Sisyphus and all that

I’ve never heard of him except on here. And Google/Meta know me well enough to promote any hint of triathlon marketing into my feeds.

It’s a good educational visit, I’d say :+1:t3:

It has it’s plus sides; Leffe six packs and Desperados in 500ml cans.

But he’s a professional adventurer, isn’t he, so he has to keep doing stuff to generate content and sell his stories.
